This mechanical thermostat monitors temperature and opens or closes the circuit at a fixed set point to control heat and prevent overheating. Replacing a failed thermostat restores safe operation and consistent performance. What it does:

  • Senses surface or component temperature and switches the circuit at a calibrated threshold
  • Helps protect heaters, motors, and controls from thermal damage due to over-temperature
  • Common symptoms of failure: no heat, shuts off mid-cycle, won't start until cooled, or intermittent operation
  • Restores proper temperature control after a thermostat sticks open/closed or drifts out of spec
What's included:
  • 1 thermostat
Install notes:
  • Disconnect power at the breaker (and shut off gas, if applicable) before servicing
  • Note wire positions and transfer leads one-for-one to the new thermostat
  • Mount flush against the sensing surface with original screws/clips; reinstall any insulation or thermal interface material as found
  • Correct the root cause (blocked vents, failed fan, restricted airflow, or buildup) before returning the appliance to service

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Thermostat (Mechanical) (Part Number: OEM18069096)

Truemella, it would be recommended that the evaporator in the freezer is inspected for a heavy frost buildup. If there is a heavy frost build-up, the defrost heater WP2210895 and the bi-metal WP2211224 would need to be tested. The defrost heater should measure between 36 to 48 Ohms and the bi-metal should have continuity. If these parts test good, the defrost timer W10822278 would be the cause of failure.

Resma for Model Number W4TXNWFWQ01

My refrigerator is freezing everything top and bottom and the thermostat switch does not work. It is currently running even the switch is off. The only way to turn off the refrigerator is by unplugging it. There are 3 fans in the refrigerator and only the one in the middle is blowing cold air non-stop. The refrigerator is running continuously. There aren't any frost buildups and the exterior is all clean from dust. please advise, will this part work or should I order the defrost timer? Thank you

Hello Greg, We have a few resources for vintage appliances. They are listed at: www.appliancepartspros.com/vintage-appliance-resources.aspx. I'm not sure if you have to have a model number for this or not but I would imagine to get the correct match, a model number would still be needed.

Hello James, If it is the refrigerator side only that has stopped cooling then you would want to check to make sure that your evaporator coils are not impacted with frost. If they are impacted by frost then you would want to check you defrost bimetal WP4387490 and defrost heater WP2263749 for continuity. If they are good then you would want to replace timer. Also check your fan motor to ensure it is operational. If it is both sections that are not cooling then you would want to check you start relay WP2258450 to make sure it is not blown. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. Here is a link on how to use a multi-meter. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html

Hi B. Use a volt/ohm meter part # MA-DM1 to assist you in your diagnostics. Is the fan motor getting full 120 vac to it ? Does it turn up to speed ? The thermostat control is the device that regulates the compressor to run as well as the evaporator and the compressor. Is the freezer evaporator getting a full frost pattern across it? Remove the rear freezer wall and see if it does. Does your cold control regulate the compressor run time? Does it start and stop the compressor as commanded? If it is hard to turn then it needs replaced. The freezer should be at 32° normally and the fresh food at 38-47 °. Thank You.

Hello Roger. Check and make sure the doors are sealing properly and that the lights go off when the doors are closed. Also, get us a temperature reading inside the freezer as well. Should be around 0 in the freezer.

Hello Roger. Make sure the ice is melted off the evaporator coils and the air duct is clear from ice in the unit. Also, make sure the fan motor WPW10188389 in the freezer is running good.

Hello Roger. if the thermostat defrost WP4387490 is bad, it will prevent the unit from defrosting. It is located on the top of the evaporator coils inside the freezer compartment. You need to remove the back wall out of the freezer to access and replace this part. It should read closed for continuity when cold. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3.
