The Start Device Assembly is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. It is a kit that includes the start relay and overload, both of which are crucial components for the proper operation of the compressor. The start relay is responsible for initiating the compressor's operation by providing an electrical boost to start the motor.

Causes of a faulty start device kit can include electrical component failure, power surges, or damage due to wear and tear over time.

Symptoms of a bad start device kit may include:

  • The compressor not running or cycling on and off frequently
  • Inadequate cooling or fluctuations in temperature
  • Unusual noises coming from the refrigerator

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Start Device Assembly (Part Number: OEM18049767)

1 Answer

Roy, There are a couple of possibilities. The actuator switch WP2162361 in the dispenser could have failed and is not supplying the power to the dispenser motor WPW10317991 in the freezer compartment. The first thing to check is the wire harness at the top freezer door hinge, a loose or broken connection could also cause the motor to not run. A failed dispenser motor is a most likely issue.

Hello Roger. It sounds like the compressor is bad and will need to be replaced on the unit.

Cory for Model Number Whirlpool fridge/freezer side-by-side ED5FHEXVB01

My whirlpool is no longer cooling, no frost build-up anywhere, everything is clean. Both fans work great. I hear a click by the compressor (assuming that is the relay clicking) and the compressors humms for 5-10sec and clicks off. The resistance on the compressor was 4,6, and 10ohms. I'm not sure how to test the relay. There is continuity through the top two inlets with the outlet portion of the other side, and the bottom inlet through the bottom outlet of the relay. Where do I go from here?

1 Answer

Wes, If the unit is not coming back out of the defrost cycle then the relay on the control board is sticking and the control board WP2307037 would need to be replaced.

Brenda for Model Number NNS228GA

I bought the relay/overload start device combo and I have a question...There are only 2 visible places on this new start device to attach the wires that are coming from my fridge. Which ones do I use? From the fridge, I have 1 black (or dk blue)wire, and then another clip/connector with a combo of a white and 2 black (or dk blue)wires going to the old relay. The old relay plugged onto 2(bottom) of the 3 posts of the compressor. The top post of the compressor has a black wire connected that goes to the overload. There is also an orange wire going to a connector on the overload and a dk blue wire going to a separate connector on the overload. which ones go where?

1 Answer

Hello Brenda, You will have to trace wires back to the condenser fan motor. The hot wire coming off the condenser fan motor, either blue or orange will go to the L1 on the new relay. The white wire from the condenser fan will go to the N on the new relay. The other wires will be eliminated from the circuit at this point.

Hello phucthefridge. You need to make sure the power is disconnected. You will pull the relay off the unit first. Then the overload pulls off the compressor. If there is a cover on there, you will need to remove the cover to access and remove the parts. Both parts in the start kit WPW10189190 pull off the compressor.
