The Inlet Valve is an OEM component for Whirlpool refrigerators. It is responsible for controlling and regulating the flow of water into the ice maker and water dispenser components. The valve inlet plays an important role in precisely metering water levels for optimal operation of these features.

Causes of a bad Inlet Valve can include mineral buildup inhibiting proper function, worn out or damaged sealing components, or issues with the electronic controls that operate the valve.

Symptoms of a bad inlet valve include:

  • No water supply to the ice maker or dispenser
  • Leaks or drips from the valve area
  • Error codes related to water issues
  • Ice maker or dispenser not functioning properly

This OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore refrigerator models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Valve-Inlt (Part Number: OEM18047856)

1 Answer

Wayne I, This could be no ice, no water to the ice maker, water leak, etc. Based on your model number the water valve is located in the back, in the machine compartment.

Hello Steve, This could be an issue with the filter housing WPW10121138 or the water pressure being supplied to the unit from the home plumbing.

Carl for Model Number Kenmore Elite 10657703703

Aloha and thank you for your help and recent advice, much appreciated. (how to turn off ice maker) Originally, the intake dispenser valve was leaking and there was overflow in the ice maker. So, -I replaced the intake valve, but there was no water flowing to the ice machine, water dispenser on door works. -My infrared sensor wasn't lighting up so I replaced the infrared sensor, but still no water going into the ice maker. -I checked the dispenser tube to the ice maker, no blocks. -Water pressure is the same as before the ice maker stopped working. I guess the last thing to check is if the ice maker is bad? I saw on the forum the instructions, but I'm a bit unclear on how to determine if the ice maker is bad or not. Based on what I've described, what do you think? Thank you.

1 Answer

Carl, based on the information provided, it would more than likely be the ice maker 2198597 causing the issue as the IR sensor has been replaced as well as the water valve.

Aloha! I really appreciate the information you provide here, extremely helpful. I had some issues with cracked lines and I think leaks from the intake valve. I fixed the lines, I think, but had a small drip from the 5/16 intake valve connection point, but I managed to eliminate that by using an elbow union to keep the line more upright going into the intake valve. Water dispenser works, but the ice maker is overflowing. Is there a way to turn keep water from the ice-maker but keep the dispenser flowing? I ordered a new intake valve but would like the water dispenser functioning if possible while we wait for the part. Thank you!

1 Answer

Carl, there would not be a way to shut off specifically the ice maker side of the water line as there are no manual shut off valves in the water system. If the water is flowing too much into the ice maker but is not leaking by when the ice maker is not calling for water, then the ice maker can be turned off by sliding the optical sensor on the right to the off position.

James, You will want to check for 120 vac at the water valve as the icemaker cycles. If the ice maker cycles completely and no voltage appears then the ice maker would need to be replaced. If you get the voltage as the ice maker cycles then replace the water valve.

Don, the control module W10190935 can be replaced separately from the entire ice maker assembly. However, the control on the smart valve is not available separate from the valve itself.

Ki for Model Number Whirlpool GS6NBEXRL01

On my Whirlpool GS6NBEXRL01 refrigerator, water started to drip a very little every few minutes or so through the water spout. Some times more frequently and sometimes less frequently. Reading some Q&A here and others made me believe that I needed to replace the Water Inlet Valve. So I did, but I continue to have the same problem. Maybe the amount/frequency has gotten lower than before, so it's less noticeable, but I can see it still drips. What else can be wrong? I asked about another question about when I push out the water filter, the water started to splashes out and I was told the filter housing needs to be replaced. Can filter housing also cause this water dripping through the water spout problem?

1 Answer

Li, if you have a leak in the plastic water line anywhere in the water system it will drip. The water line needs to me in a vacuum so that no air is introduced into the line. When air gets into a water line, it will leak. Check all your connections, all the way back to the water valve to see if there is a loose connection.
