The Water Valve is an OEM part for Whirlpool ice machines. This part controls the flow of water into the ice maker, ensuring it receives the correct amount of water for ice production.

Causes of a bad water valve can include wear and tear from regular use, mineral buildup from hard water, or electrical failures.

Symptoms of a bad water valve include:

  • The ice machine not producing ice
  • Slow or inconsistent ice production
  • Leaking water from the valve area
  • No water entering the ice machine
  • You should replace the water valve if it becomes faulty or damaged.

This OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper and some Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Valve (Part Number: OEM17947182)

Tyler, the water valve is operated using a pre-set time in the control WP2304016 programming. The control should supply 120VAC to the valve for only 1 minute. If the water valve is getting 120VAC for longer than 1 minute, the control has failed. If there is water coming through after a minute and there is not voltage, the valve W10801996 has failed.

My ice maker makes ice just fine. However, water is leaking out on my ice-forming tray at the opposite end of the filler valve. It freezes (as drip icicles) all over the side of the freezer compartment. Apparently too much water is entering the ice-forming tray when it is being filled. Is there an adjustment to control the AMOUNT of water entering the filler-tray? Do I have a bad filler valve? OR...? Please advise. Thank you in advance for your advice.

Carl, First check and make sure the refrigerator and the ice maker are both level. The fill level is adjustable, but is usually a "temporary" repair, you will eventually need to replace the fill valve. The adjustment is relatively easy, but has it's limits. After you've checked for level, remove the front cover on the right side of the mechanism housing you'll see a white nylon adjustment pin with a slot in the end. Turn the pin clockwise to reduce the water level, and counterclockwise to increase the water level. You want to adjust the pin 1/2 a turn until the desired water level is reached, and no more than two(2) total revolutions.

Roger, To properly assist we would need the model number but if the unit is just constantly filling with water then this would most likely be caused by the water valve.

Water supply good going to the ice maker. But resovoir slow to fill and not filling all the way. Churning sound goes on too long. Thin ice. I can add water to fill resovoir and the churning stops and it starts recirculating the water across the plate. I just had a new recirculating pump a few weeks ago and the pro said he thought my water cutoff valve needed replaced, because he did not think the machine was getting enough water supply. I replaced the cut off valve, the machine still acts like it doesn't get enough water. Resovoir slow to fill and not filling but about half full please help. I thought it. Might be the solenoid water valve? Please help. Thanks

Whirlpool ice maker stand alone unit. When the water is coming into the unit it is making a high pitched noise in the pump looking part at the bottom left behind the grill. the water line is connected to it and other lines are connected to it going into the machine. It looks like the part #1 on the diagram # 2185758 but the diagram doesn't tell one where on the machine it is really located so I am not 100% sure that is the right part. The machine is still working just making this loud high pitched sound when it fills. I want to be sure the right part is purchased and I wonder how hard it is to replace. If I need to call a plumber or we can try to do it. Thanks for any help.

Hello Ralph. Make sure the freezer is between 0° and 5°. You need to check and see if there is power going to the water valve when the icemaker cycles. If so, replace the water valve on the unit. If not, or the icemaker does not cycle, you will need to replace the icemaker on the unit. Also, check and make sure the fill tube on the unit is not frozen and clogged. If so, replace the water valve and thaw out the fill tube. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. Here is a link on how to use a multi-meter. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html

Ralph, You will want to check to make sure that the fill tube is not frozen by pulling the icemaker and checking the fill tube. If this is frozen then the water valve would need to be replaced.

Roy, The way that this unit is designed, when the cycle starts, water will run into the reservoir for a certain length of time. Once the reservoir reaches the full level the excess water will run through a hole in the back of the reservoir and drain through the drain hole in the back of the bin. Regardless if the bin has water in it or not the unit will fill and is basically flushing the water reservoir to put clean water into it and will drain off all excess that is going into the reservoir to the drain.

Jon P., Unfortunately there are no water valve repair kits available and you would want to replace the complete water valve W10801996.
