If your microwave runs but won't heat food or makes grinding noises, the magnetron has likely failed. Moderate DIY repair requiring capacitor discharge.
Wife let me know the microwave was making grinding noise while I was in garage fixing her car starter, never a dull moment. Further questioning she also said it wan't heating the food. Due to being an odd sized built in $$ unit I had to have repaired. I was getting quotes in the $4-500 range for just the magnetron. I was pretty confident the magnetron was the issue and also ordered a new capacitor and diode since I was going to be in there and a lot of money ahead repairing myself. About... Read more
Controls exhaust airflow in over-the-range microwaves. Replaces bent, damaged, or missing damper assemblies for proper external venting installation.
We followed the manufacturer's instructions about re-positioning the fan motor and installing the vent damper (easy). We constructed a duct system from the microwave to the outside of the house (challenging). We used 3.25" x 10" metal duct to start the system through the wall behind the microwave, where we added framing to reinforce a cut stud. We ran the duct up a closet wall and through its ceiling into the attic. We had to make an offset duct piece from 3.25" x 10" metal duct to clear a... Read more

Captures grease particles during cooking to maintain air quality and microwave efficiency. Replace when clogged or discolored. Verify fit with your model.
My particular model of microwave had one screw visible but the other hidden behind a plastic ring. I needed to pop the ring out by disengaging the plastics clips using a putty knife; then it was an easy job of unscrewing the old handle and screwing the new one in. It probably took me just as long to write this description as it did to actually replace the handle. Read more
Microwave not heating? The magnetron generates microwave energy for cooking. Common repair when unit runs but won't heat food. Moderate DIY difficulty.
Microwave not heating? A failed high-voltage capacitor prevents the magnetron from working. Requires discharging and wall unit removal to replace.
I ordered the capacitor, diode, and magnetron in hopes that I would be able to complete the repair using the less expensive parts. I first removed the oven from the wall and then I removed the metal housing to access the internal parts. I discharged the capacitor using a pair of insulated needle nose pliers. Then I changed out the diode and the capacitor and reassembled the unit and tested it. It still did not heat so I disassembled the unit again and replaced the magnetron this time.... Read more
