How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP4011179 / 12112425 Pump And Drive Belt Kit

Ordered the 2 belt repair kit and installed them in less than 15 minutes. Works like a charm now. They simply install from the bottom of the machine as per the video. 

Replaced injector valve and nozzle. While I was getting these two items, I order the two belts for the machine. Parts came in very quickly and repair took only about 15 minutes. Thank you. 

I changed basket seals and bearing and belts. I had to use penetrating oil and a heat gun to get the sleave off the transmission shaft. Make sure you wear mechanics gloves when removing panels and tub and basket. I used a little gasket cement to hold the blue fiber washers onto the tub supports. When I ran in the seals there was a little noise and hot rubber smell but I did two loads of laundry and all went well. The agitator seemed to move better and the spin cycle remove much more water than in the recent past. My clothes dried in about half the time. 

The washer would screech when ending a cycle. I replaced the brake assembly and reassembled. Be aware that the small lock that holds the brake pulley on is a ribbed lock style that has to match the spindle to go on correctly. I didn't realize this and couldn't figure out why the pulley kept falling off during the load. Once I put it on correctly, the belts started to screech because there was too much friction on the pulley and brake assembly. I ordered new belts and replaced them. Still screeching. I had taken pictures of the brake assembly after my repair and compared them to the current condition. I found the action of the loose pulley had overtightened the brake assembly causing it to not spin freely. I simply loosened the brake assembly a couple rotations and reassembled. It works fine now. Be aware that without the Maytag wrench to remove the brake assembly this is a pound on it until it comes loose project. I used a punch against the perimeter bolts of the old brake to remove. It wasn't easy and I'm a very handy guy use to repairing vehicles etc. 

Replaced damper pads. 

Replaced tub bearing and stem seal. The video is an excellent help. Did have a little issue removing the spanner nut as there was some corrosion involved. Found that hitting the spanner wrench with a metal hammer provides more "impact" than a plastic or rubber hammer. The metal hammer did the trick. Also had to use a hammer and chisel to split the sleeve on the transmission as the video indicates might be necessary. This worked very well with minimal effort. While this project could be done by one person, I was fortunate to have another set of hands around to hold the transmission while trying to remove the old parts. Also, having someone to hang on to the outer tub while the tub and bolts are being removed/reinstalled is very helpful. The machine now sounds like a new one during the spin cycle. A very important consideration is that this machine is pre "water efficient" design, and does an excellent job on soiled items. I am aware of numerous horror stories where people have bought new water efficient machines only to find out they don't even put enough water in the tub to completely wet the cloths or rinse all the soap out. This is reason enough to do a repair such as this.. Time to do the job was over 2 hours as indicated below, because I took the time to completely clean old soap scum from the tubs using a garden hose and rags. Definitely a done better done in the summer than the winter. 

1. Used plastic container to scoop most of the water out of the washer. 2. Disconnected hose from pump and put in bucket to make sure water was draining from tub. 3. Reached under washer and turned pump pulley to make sure turning. 4. Disconnected exit hose from pump, put end in bucket and ran water from drain end of hose thru hose to bucket to make sure hose not clogged. 5. Tried taking some slack out of pump belt by loosening three screws under pump and sliding to tighten up a little. With all hoses reconnected, still not draining. 6. Even though pump not frozen or leaking, figured only thing left in the water path that I hadn't checked. 7. Bought new pump and new belts. Received the next day! Installed. All works. Replaced the drive belts (2). whole process took no more than 15 minutes. 

Turned off the water and electricity, then removed the front panel. Raised the front of the washer.Positioned a towel to catch the water, then loosened the hoses from the pump. Pushed the motor over to loosen the belts and then removed them. Removed the old pump and installed the new one in the same position. Put the new belts in position and again moved the motor and slid the motor and installed the belts on the pulley. Put new clamps on the hose and attached them to the pump. Turned on the water and electricity, checked for leaks. Lowered the machine and reinstalled the front panel. 

I did some trouble shooting by turning the ring on the timer , was able to get the drain cycle to work by moving the ring around control knob. This would work some of the time and other times you could hear motor try to start then stop if I moved the dial too far. I checked to see if this occurred on other permanent and delicate cycle as well and found similar issues with draining or spinning. I found your trouble shooting guide with related and parts to problems very useful. I was able to determine issue was more than likely the timing mechanism and decided it probably be good to replace the pump and drive belts while I was at it. Timer and belts took me about 40 minutes to remove and replace, Machine is running like new! Thanks for the helpful tips and the made in USA parts!
