The Cold Control is an OEM part for Frigidaire refrigerators. It regulates the temperature inside the fridge and freezer compartments by controlling the compressor, evaporator fan, and cooling vents. Proper cooling depends on the cold control operating reliably.

Symptoms of a bad cold control include:

  • Fluctuating temperatures that don't stay consistent
  • The refrigerator or freezer running excessively hot or cold
  • The compressor not turning on at all

Causes of failure can be worn over many years of use or damage to electronic components. Without an accurately functioning control, cooling performance diminishes significantly.

This OEM Frigidaire part can also be used on Electrolux, Frigidaire, Gibson, Kelvinator, Westinghouse, and Sears/Kenmore.

Rob, make sure all fan motors are running and the compressor is running, temps in freezer should be around zero, refrigerator temp should be 35-40 degrees. You can check the operating thermostat and the defrost timer if you don't hear anything running.

Rob, The issue you are having is the defrost water is coming threw the air ducts supply instead of into the drain troth.A small adjustment of the control housing being moved forward would cure this.As far as your temps you can check the thermastat in refrigerator control housing to see if it reads continuity if temps above 35 or so.If check fails part #241537103 for cold control. Also make sure defrost timer is advancing.

Chris, You will want to check the frost pattern on the evaporator coils to see if there is a good frost pattern. If there is a good frost pattern also check to make sure that the evaporator fan motor is working. This issue would most likely be that the fan is not running and is seized up and not turning.

My refrigerator is 44 years old(I know amazing) it is a side by side, I have a problem with things on the side closest to the freezer freezing especially liquids. I have the dial set at about 1 1/2. I called a repair place and they said it was probably the cold control. They could not find that part anywhere around here. I noticed on your site there is also a cold control thermostat. What do you think it would be and would you have the part and cost? The freezer is ok and the fridge is cold.

Linda, It sounds like the issue would be the cold control on the unit but unfortunately we are unable to locate the cold control for this model.

I had noticed that my food was not freezing but staying cold, The fan runs and the refrigerator is cold. There is no ice buildup in my freezer. I did move the refrigerator out and cleaned all the dust from the coils and condenser. After doing so I put a thermometer in the freezer and when it does kick on it goes down to like 10°F, but then it will not kick back on until it get up around 32° or 34° then it kicks back on and the fan is running.

Hello Bill, If there is a frosty build-up on the rear freezer wall you will need to locate the defrost timer in the fresh food ceiling and advance it manually by turning it clockwise until a loud click is heard. This should energize the defrost circuit so it can be troubleshot. By the time you get the rear freezer wall out the defrost heater should be heated up. If so, replace the defrost timer 215846602 if voltage is getting to the number 1 terminal from the temperature control. If not, the temperature control has likely failed. If voltage is being passed to the defrost circuit but the heater is not heating up, the most common cause is a failed defrost thermostat 5303918202. A defrost failure such as this is common and is the likely cause of temperatures in both compartments to be affected. Be sure to completely defrost the unit with a hair dryer since the defrost circuit is only designed to clear normal frost build-up between cycles. If not cleared, there will be an ongoing temperature issue with the unit.

Just the Other Night My Refrigerator and Freezer stopped working.I took the Back cover off and Noticed that the Fan Blade(fan for coils) had come off of it's Shaft.Compressor was Very Hot.So I repaired fan Blade by just pushing it back onto its shaft,Unplugged the Unit from the wall and let the Compressor cool off overnight.Next Morning I plugged it in and it Worked Fine for about 36 Hours.Today it quit working completely until I messed around with the Temperature knobs and it suddenly Started everything back up again(compressor and both fans). It seems as if Compressor and both fans are working intermittently due to Cold Control needing to be replaced? That is My best Guess.Any Suggestions.Unit is 12 Years Old and not used alot as it is only Me Who uses it.Thank You.ps does the Cold Control have any influence over the Fans? And or Compressor?

1 Answer

Peter, Yes the cold control will start and stop the fans according to whether the unit is at temperature or needs to cool. If you were able to play with the cold control then it would be a bad cold control.

Richard, It would be recommended to pull the rear cover in the freezer off and see if there is frost impacting the evaporator coils. If there is then this would be a defrost issue. You would want to test the defrost thermostat and defrost heater for continuity and if they check ok then the timer would be the issue. If there is very little frost on the coils and only loop down just a little from where they come into the freezer then this would be a sealed system issue and would need service. If there is a full even frost pattern from top to bottom without it impacting the coils then it would be more likely that the thermostat will be the issue.

Hello Jeff. You will need to check for a clogged drain. If you remove the control panel inside the unit, you will see the drain hole in the back of it.

My refrigerator is not getting cold enough, it stays around 48-50 f. I have the thermostat set to coldest setting. Everything turns off like it reaches the proper temp but it's still to warm. If I adjust the temp control to mid setting it again operates like normal but might be 55 f. I checked the fans and defrost and all of that looks good. Plenty of air flow. Everything seems to be working fine. It appears as if the thermostat is confused about the temp of the fridge and is shutting down too soon. Is that possible and if so would the cold control part be the proper thing to replace? If it was a compressor problem or the fridge was just wearing out, wouldn't the compressor an fan keep running in an attempt to reach the cold temp?

1 Answer

Todd, The cold control would be the most likely cause for the refrigerator section getting too warm if the defrost system is good and there is a good frost pattern on the coils.
