Symptoms of a failing compressor run capacitor include:

  • The refrigerator not running or cooling properly
  • The compressor failing to start or running intermittently
  • Humming or buzzing noises coming from the compressor area

Causes of needing to replace the compressor run capacitor can include normal wear over time, exposure to high temperatures or electrical surges, or physical damage to the capacitor itself.

Hello, I looked at the video in regards to replacing the following part on my refrigerator. The repair video shows a metal clip to be removed from the part listed below. Mine has a black plastic case over it and I'm not sure how to remove it to replace the compressor run capacitor. I'd tried to use a flat-head screwdriver on what appeared to be a tap on top of this cover. It gave resistance and I didn't want to keep fooling around with it and snap it off. Is there a video on how to remove this cover so I can replace the compressor run capacitor? Compressor Run Capacitor Part Number: AP4315853 Made by: Frigidaire

1 Answer

Hello Michelle. Insert the screwdriver into the slot on the top and ply the handle down to unsnap the cover off the compressor.

Jean, while there is ice blocking the evaporator coils, use a meter and test the defrost thermostat 5303918202 and heater 240356221 for closed circuits. If the heater and thermostat check OK, replace the defrost timer 215846602 Use a hair dryer or steamer to remove the ice from the evaporator coils. That will keep you going until the replacement part(s) arrive and you can get the refrigerator properly repaired.

Hello Jean. If the fans are working, and the compressor is running, but the unit is not cooling, you have sealed system failure and will need an HVAC tech to come out and repair the unit.

Hello John. You will need to order and replace the ADC board 5303918476 on the unit. It sounds like it is bad. You can test the voltage into it and out of it at the board itself.

Freezer/refrigerator all of a sudden stopped cooling. Seems the freezer and fresh food are about the same temperature now around 38°F to 42°F. Could just be because the unit is in my garage which is around 45°F to 50°F so it just seems like it is still cooling? Fans are running all the time, but it seems the compressor is hit or miss. If I unplug the unit the compressor may or may not come back on. If it doesn't, I hear the symptoms of a bad start relay. I can go back out in the garage later and the compressor will be running. Even if the compressor is on it doesn't seem to be cooling like it should.

1 Answer

Hello Justin, If the unit is in a room the temperature of the fresh food compartment, the thermostat will call for cooling and the freezer side will warm to room temperature. The only correction for this is to warm the room to above the fresh food temperature setting, (optimum performance from room temperature of 75°F to 85°F as per manufacturer) so the temperature control can warm up and call for cooling.

unit runs and cools fine but at times the compressor will not start. the inside blower runs but compressor doesn't. to start the compressor all you have to do is touch the ptc/compacitor which are connected together and plugged into the compressor. the compressor immediately starts and runs and cools perfectly. it will work hours or a day or two and the same problem. just touch the ptc/compacitor, you hear a slight arc sound or click sound and it starts right up again and runs perfectly. is this a ptc problem or a capacitor problem?

1 Answer

Mike, It's not likely a capacitor problem 5304464438. Before you replace the PTC/Relay 218721108, you may want to unplug the power cord and check the wiring to the capacitor and relay for loose connections, and make sure the PTC relay is properly mounted and seated on the pins of the compressor. If all's OK, replace the PTC relay.
