Tom for Model Number 253.53714300

After replacing the control box part#5304482075.How long does it take for the damper to open and start cooling the fresh food side? The temp in the fridge was 50 when I restarted the unit after replacing the control box. Also when I removed the capilary tube from the freezer I left the white tube in the freezer, slide the the black tube toward the thermostat and inserted the new capilary into the white tube the same length as the old one. Was this correct?

1 Answer

Hello Tom. When the freezer and fresh food are satisfied, it should work properly. It sounds like you installed the tube correctly. It should open the damper on the start up of the unit.

Hello Demar, This sounds like the damper door 5304482075 is iced up or inoperative. This is the part that controls the amount of freezer air is shared to the fresh food compartment.

Our Frigidaire Gallery Side by Side was freezing the fresh compartment but all other functions were fine (beside poor water flow). I check the damper and it was not closing. I turned the thermostats off and the fan stopped but the damper remained open and the motor did not cycle. I ordered controller 5304482075 and installed it. The damper motor ran but the damper did not move. I removed the unit from the fridge to discover the damper spring missing. I removed the spring from the old controller and installed it and the damper functioned correctly. Fan worked, thermostats seemed to work all seemed well. The next day the fridge was warm and the freezer thawing. Warm air is coming from under the unit, air is flowing through the damper, and the compressor runs. I checked all connections, checked for kinks in the mercury tubes, and still the temperature remained above zero Centigrade on the freezer side and warm on the fridge. All I can see different on the controller is an extra electrical reference to the micro-switches on the damper motor. I reinstalled the old unit and the fridge functions correctly but the damper of course doesn't work. What is wrong?

Hi Jerry. Is the evaporator fan motor turning up to speed? If not then replace it with part # 5303918549. It seems as if the defrost thermostat (Limiter) is lazy and not opening as quick as it should. It is p[art # 3206322. Go over all the wire connections especially the molex connector pins as you connected them to the cabinet connector when you replaced the control box kit. If there is a white plastic sleeve cover on the original cold control capillary sensor , make sure you reuse it on the new one and straighten the new capillary tubes. Thank You.

Will the AP5176342 fix my unit? The technician already replaced the two thermostats, AP211625, and AP2151626. I hope these are the same thermostat's that is shipped with your AP5176342. His thermostats could have been bad. If not them I'm just attempting repairs in the dark. Would I be better off to order your part where it would have everything in it and fix my problem? The thermostat's were located up directly behind the control knobs for the freezer and refrigerator controls. He also replaced the board inside of the control box assembly. But I still have the same problem. It's reading below freezing on the refrigerator side and freezing my drinking water. Sometimes the freezer temperature will drop very low but it is still freezing.

Hello Dray, If the technician has already changed the parts you mentioned, the parts are more than likely good. I would be more likely to suspect that the damper assembly linkage is binding or inoperative. It doesn't sound like the thermostats were the issue to begin with as if the items in the bottom of the fresh food section are freezing, this is the indication of an air circulation issue. Before you buy any parts, pull the bottom drawers out and make sure that the air return duct is clear. If it is, try setting the fresh food compartment temperature colder and the freezer warmer. You see, the knee jerk reaction to the fresh food section freezing is to set the temperature in that compartment warmer. This is backwards to the design of the unit. Think of it this way: When the thermostats are satisfied, the fans are turned off. Since cold air is heavier than warm air, the cold air drops to the bottom of the unit. If the thermostats are set to a temperature where they are not kicking on, the fans stay off. If the issue is freezing in the bottom of the fresh food compartment, this indicates that the thermostats are satisfied too long and the fans need to be energized to circulate the air more often. Therefore, if you set the freezer to 0° to 10°F without ever dropping below 0°F, and you set the fresh food section at 35° to 38°F with a freezer thermometer, the thermostats should operate properly and kick the fans on often enough to prevent the cold air migration backwards through the air return port into the bottom of the fresh food section. It is very common for folks to make the mistake of setting the fresh food section warmer when items in the crisper drawers and the water tank is freezing, when in fact this is the reverse of what needs to be done to correct the issue. If the temperature adjustments do not solve the issue, at that time I would replace the damper assembly, (which is included in the control box kit 5304482075). It is the part that should have been changed to begin with from the way I understand your initial complaint. I hope I stated this in a way that you understand and I have not just added confusion to your issue. Please let me know if I can assist you any further as I want your issue to be resolved.

Hello Sleekness. Check and make sure the condenser coils are clean and the fan motor is running properly. Also, based on the information you provided, it sounds like the damper 241600902 is bad and will need to be replaced. If there is power coming to the damper motor and it does not open and close, you will need to replace the damper. Turn the unit off and see if the damper closes. If not, you will need to replace the damper. If it does close, you will need to replace the fresh food 241537104 cold control, due to it not reading the correct temperature in the refrigerator.
