The Agitator Assembly is an OEM part for GE washing machines. This essential component is responsible for moving clothes during the wash cycle, ensuring thorough cleaning by continually shifting the laundry within the drum. The agitator's design includes fins or vanes that help to circulate water and detergent through the clothes, effectively removing dirt without causing excessive wear to the fabric.

Symptoms of a bad Agitator Assembly include:

  • The agitator not moving or only moving weakly during the wash cycle.
  • Unusual noises like grinding or thumping indicating mechanical issues.
  • Clothes coming out still dirty or less clean than expected, suggesting insufficient agitation.
  • The top portion of the agitator moving independently from the base, known as "stripped" agitator dogs.

Causes of a bad agitator can include worn out mechanical parts such as gears or bearings, a damaged drive shaft, or the agitator becoming detached from the transmission due to loosening of the securing bolt.

This GE replacement part is also compatible with Hotpoint, RCA, and some Kenmore models,

Pro Tip: When replacing the agitator, also consider replacing the agitator coupling (WH49X10042).

Questions & Answers

For Ge Agitator Assembly (Part Number: OEM11895474)

Wendy, Your washer has an agitator coupling WH49X10042 that the agitator "snaps' on to, and the coupler is bolted to the transmission shaft. On occasion the coupler will get loose and or "strip out" and the agitator won't move properly. You'll need a belt, strap, or piece of rope to slip under the agitator and tug or pull up on the agitator and lift it off the coupler, then you can loosen the bolt and check the coupler splines. Thanks and Good Luck

Hello Greg. Run a rope under the agitator WH43X10034 and jerk the agitator upward to remove it from the washer. These can be very tight to remove. Hope this helps.

I posted a question 1/19/12 about replacing my GE agitator. I replaced it and it is not the problem. I removed the washer front panel and ran a cycle with no clothes. When the mach began to spin the noise was evident. It is from the transmission. the noise is metalic. Does it mean the whole transmission needs to be replaced (Item 320). What can I do to repair this mach? Transmission is firm to the tub, Nothing is loose so I suspect this is a internal problem ? Something loose or broken. Is it safe to use the washer until I can get it fixed? I appreciate your opinion. Thank you!

Theo, Yes, you'll need to replace the transmission WH38X10002. The part is a "sealed" unit,by the manufacturer, any internal malfunction will require a complete transmission replacement. It's not that "hard" a repair, just cumbersome and a bit time consuming. Good Luck and Thanks

I cannot decide if I have a problem; My agitator has a looseness; The top part has 1/8 inch of play up and down plus side play of at lease 1/4 inch.I look down at the top and see a milkie plastic cap that I tried to ply off thru the side slots with no luck. The washer is noisey in spin!! Is this normal? Don't remember it being this bad when new. Does the agitator pull off with a rope sling like I seen on one of your videos and do you have a video for this agitator repair on this machine?

1 Answer

Hello Theo. If the agitator WH43X10034 is to loose, you will need to replace the agitator. It does pull out of the unit using a rope to remove the agitator from the coupling. Hope this helps.

Scott, a couple of things to look for. There should be no more than a 3/8 inch gap between the bottom of the agiator and the tub. You can slip your finger tips between the agitator and the the tub, there should be some resistance when you get to the clips that hold the agitator to the coupling. Yes, a good sharp hit with the palm of your hand, should seat and lock the agitator in place. If you don't get it locked down, it will eventually come up and off the coupling and float up. Good Luck and Thanks

Dennis, The coupler has "splines" on the bottom of the housing in the center, that slip onto the "splines" of the metal agitator shaft. Sounds like you have a "stripped out" coupler, unless the bolt is loose WH49X10042 . Good Luck and Thanks

I ordered the entire agitator 3 piece assembly kit for replacement from you, which worked well and I replaced the coupling and seal. Now, the coupling (which the agitator slides on) is stuck on the agitator and the entire agitator has come off of the bolt and the bolt is loose inside of the agitator. How do you remove the coupling so that I can start over and put the coupling on, bolt it down, and then put the agitator back on? I'm not a very strong woman, so is there an easier way to remove it, or does it even come off, because it's locked very tightly on there. PLEASE HELP, as I cannot use washing machine at all! Thanks.

1 Answer

Hello WasherWanda. It will be very difficult to remove the coupling from the agitator WH43X10034. You can try using a ice pick and a punch to slowly work out the coupling from the bottom. Hope this helps.

Broni, under the agitator, there is a plastic coupling held to the agitator shaft by a bolt WH43X10032 . did you bolt the coupler back down to the shaft ? Remove the agitator and check the "clips in the center opening of the agitator, make sure they did not break off, when you removed the agitator, if all's OK, make sure you press the agitator down, and firmly, until you hear or feel the "clips" snap into place. Thanks and Good Luck

Hello Paul. There is nothing to remove in the center of the agitator WH43X10034, according to the model number you provided. The agitator is removed by pulling it upward and out of the machine. Hope this helps.
