The Agitator Assembly is an OEM part for GE washing machines. This essential component is responsible for moving clothes during the wash cycle, ensuring thorough cleaning by continually shifting the laundry within the drum. The agitator's design includes fins or vanes that help to circulate water and detergent through the clothes, effectively removing dirt without causing excessive wear to the fabric.

Symptoms of a bad Agitator Assembly include:

  • The agitator not moving or only moving weakly during the wash cycle.
  • Unusual noises like grinding or thumping indicating mechanical issues.
  • Clothes coming out still dirty or less clean than expected, suggesting insufficient agitation.
  • The top portion of the agitator moving independently from the base, known as "stripped" agitator dogs.

Causes of a bad agitator can include worn out mechanical parts such as gears or bearings, a damaged drive shaft, or the agitator becoming detached from the transmission due to loosening of the securing bolt.

This GE replacement part is also compatible with Hotpoint, RCA, and some Kenmore models,

Pro Tip: When replacing the agitator, also consider replacing the agitator coupling (WH49X10042).

For Ge Agitator Assembly (Part Number: OEM11895474)

Hello Linda, The agitator will "pop" straight up and off of the agitator coupler. You will probably have to "yank" it pretty hard since it is made to fit snugly so it won't come off during a wash.

We recently did a load including a washable "rubbery" bathtub mat, as we have done many times before. This time, it looks like something (probably the agitator) sliced a triangular chunk out of the mat approx 4-5 inches on each side (straight, even cuts). When the load was done, water had leaked out of the bottom of the washer, and the chunk was missing. I am concerned that it might have slipped under the agitator, or somewhere else where it may be blocking the water drainage. I was unable to figure out how to remove the agitator based on previous questions, and I am not sure where else to look for the missing piece of the mat. Any suggestions?

Hello Marc. You need to disassemble the pump and look for the mat inside the pump. Most likely, this is where you will find it.

Our washer fills and spins, but does not seem to agitate. When I removed the agitator, the coupling seems to spin, but not with the agitator in place. The splines inside of the agitator seem a little worn, but not broken. Will I necessarily need to replace the agitator assembly, or are there any other likely problems that keep the agitator from turning while attached to the coupling? Also, is there a way to get the washer to agitate while the lid is open, so that I can really see what is going on when I close the lid?

1 Answer

Hello Alice, My experience has taught me that even though the inside splines look OK in the coupler WH49X10042, they can in fact be stripped. They aren't stripped completely away, but enough of the "high" parts of the spline teeth will strip and you see splines, but they cannot drive a load.

Hi Diane. There is a washer agitator coupler 3" round by 3" tall with a tapered top under the agitator itself. If this is broken then it will have this affect. Part # WH49X10042. Once you have the agitator off, look to see if the hub nut part # WH2X1193 has loosened from the top of the agitator. Use loctite part # F8283401 on the threads to help keep it tight. Then look underneath the large transmission pulley nut to see if this is tight as well. If it is then you need to replace the transmission assy. part # WH38X10002. And the tub seal part # WH02X10383. Thank You.

Pete, There should be a 1/4 to 3/8 inch gap between the bottom of the agitator and the tub. You may wan t to remove the agitator and check that the coupler is seated all the way down and secured tightly with the bolt. As for the spin issue, were the tub bearings in good condition or did you replace those as well? The belt WH1X2026 is it new as well? Did you properly seat the motor in the platform? 1. Set motor back on platform, with motor pulled all the way forward so locator pin is NOT seated in platform. 2. Hand start the four motor nut. 3. Push motor back so motor alignment pin drops into platform. 4. Tighten motor nuts. 5. Reconnect wire harness. 6. Apply belt tool (WX05X10102) to motor pulley. 7. Attach belt to large pulley using zip tie. 8. With belt looped on drive pulley, rotate large pulley until the belt slack is taken up. 9. Rotate pulley until belt is seated in motor grooves. 10. Remove belt tool and carefully cut off zip tie. 11. Put machine in spin for 60 seconds and then lift the lid. Ensure machine brakes to a complete stop under 7 seconds. If not, check lid switch and repeat brake check. BRAKE FUNCTION MUST BE WORKING. SERVICE TIP: MUST BE SURE BELT IS FULLY SEATED IN MOTOR PULLEY GROOVES" Thanks and Good Luck.

Wendy, You'll need to remove the agitator, and check and replace the coupler WH49X10042 if the "splines" in the center are damaged, and make sure the screw and bolt are installed good and tight. You shouldn't have to hammer the agitator on, I wonder if you may have damaged either component using the hammer. If you have problems removing the ahgitator use a belt, strap or piece of rope, slip it under the agitator and pull up, until the agitator "pops" off the coupler. Good Luck and Thanks
