Symptoms of a bad belt drive include:

  • The dryer drum not spinning or rotating.
  • Unusual noises coming from the dryer during operation.
  • The drum not tumbling smoothly or consistently.
  • The belt appearing frayed, cracked, or broken.

Causes of a faulty Belt Drive can include normal wear and tear over time, excessive tension or stretching, or physical damage from improper installation or foreign objects.

This OEM GE part can also be used on Hotpoint, RCA, and Kenmore/Sears appliances.

Jlemere for Model Number dbvh512efoww

Hello, Dryer stops in mid cycle, sometimes it makes it to the drying damp stage, but usually it shuts off sooner. It will stop for a min or so and restart it self going into a continuous loop of on a min off a min. There is no error code and only the cycle stops, main power is still on. Blower motor is working, lint trap deep cleaned. To clarify, it will run for a fair amount of time before the first trip, after that it's on and off and repeat. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I believe the motor is overheating but unsure why it restarts.

1 Answer

Jlemere, The most common reason for the unit cycling on and off would be that the unit has a wrinkle guard setting that is initiated at the end of a cycle that is causing the unit to bypass the shutoff and run for one minute and off for 1 minute. As far as not getting completely done would be more of an issue with the moisture sensor on the unit.

Fred, you may have more than one problem, try this, put the timer into a timed dry selection and start the machine, let it run 5 or 10 minutes and see if the timer advances, if it does, then the timer is most likely fine. The most common problem with an electric dryer that doesn't heat is a broken heater element WE11M10001 or wire to the element. You may want to start checking there.

Dan, With having replaced the splutch cam and the actuator, the issue is going to come down to a faulty gearcase. If the motor is turning and with these other 2 parts being new and installed properly then the gearcase is bad for the agitation cycle and would need to be replaced.

Hello R[ck, The idler arm should be hooked into the motor mount properly and pulled to the right as you are facing the front of the unit. If either of these are not correct, the belt will not install tightly.

Hello Lou. It could be the belt. Yu will need to look and see if it is a bad place on the belt and replace the belt if needed.

Dan, Loud squeaking noises from this type dryer is usually due to a worn drum bearing sleeve WE1M462 or shaft WE25M40, a worn belt WE03X29897 can make noise, but is usually at the start of the cycle and goes away during the cycle. Depending on age and usage, you may want to replace both, the belt WE03X29897 and bearing sleeve.

Matt for Model Number DBXR453GT3WW

I replaced the belt in August of 2010 with WE12M29 which I ordered from here, problem is the belt just broke today. The belt snapped and is only held together by threads in many other spots. Seems like the belt should last more than three years especially since the previous belt lasted way longer if it wasn't the original. My question is am I going to have to replace the belt every few years? Also is there something else that could cause the belt to fail after 3 years?

1 Answer

Hello Matt. This sounds like you may have an issue with the rear drum bearing and the front bearing. If the drum is tight or is dragging, it can cause the belt to break on the unit.

Mike for Model Number DBXR453ET3AA

I just replaced the motor and belt along with the white slides. The green slides and the white slides for that matter were fine as is the bearing support and I replaced the rear bearing last year. When I run the belt over the pulley to get a tight belt and try to run the dryer the barrel doesn't turn. I've removed the barrel and checked the alignment and it is going in fine. When I unhook the belt from the tension arm the motor spins away. The idler pulley on the tension arm spins pretty freely as well when the belt is not attached. Do you have any suggestions? Also the motor starts to work immediately after plugging in the dryer instead of waiting for the start knob to be turned. I know I'm doing something wrong but hitting a brick wall. You people rock by the way.

Mike, If the motor is coming on before the start button is pushed then the timer would be faulty causing the motor to get power when powered off. For the drum not turning but the motor does then double check the rear bearings to make sure that they are not causing an issue. If they check ok then the motor would most likely be weak not allowing to turn drum.
