Symptoms of a bad control board include:

  • Refrigerator failing to cool or freeze properly
  • Door alarms or error codes displayed
  • Lights or other features ceasing to operate

Causes can be short circuits, liquid damage to circuitry, or failure of electronic components due to prolonged use. Defects are often not repairable and replacement is necessary.

This OEM GE part is also compatible with Hotpoint, RCA, and some Kenmore refrigerator models.

For Ge Board Asm Main Contro (Part Number: OEM11657838)

Ron for Model Number ZIC360N

I recently purchased this board because my evaporator keeps icing up, replacing it did not work. So, I posted a question, I was told to check the thermistor, using the criteria the poster mentioned, I determined that the thermistor was not functioning. Consequently, I changed the thermistor (Part # AP3185407). However, the refrigerator is still not going into the defrost cycle. Then I checked the heating element, and got 200 ohms, which I suspect is normal. I don't know what else to try. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Ron, You will want to check the defrost limiter to see if the limiter is open or has continuity. If there is no continuity then the defrost limiter is faulty and would need to be replaced.

Ron, You will want to check the defrost heater and thermostat assembly to make sure that they have continuity. If not then replace the part. If they do then check the defrost thermistor for resistance. The resistance values should be 42.5 K at 0 degrees and 14. k and at 77 degrees. If not within range then replace the thermistor.

Curtis, Based on the description, this issue sounds like either a wire shorting out or a faulty control board. You will want to check wiring to make sure that you don't have any of the insulation peeling off the wiring. If the wiring checks ok then the control board would be at fault.

You folks answered my first question lightning fast Thank You so much Since you feel it is not a motherboard issue but likely a sealed unit issue I did forget to mention that for some reason now it has begun dispensing a small amount of water to the icemaker each time I open and then close the bottom freezer drawer, Does not do it with the fridge door only the freezer drawer. Also I checked the voltage on the thermistor connector "J1" between pins 1,2,3,4 against pin 5 and I am only getting 1.5 to 1.58 volts. And my meter is not picking up any reading for ohms it just continues to show "OL."

Curtis, The little bit of water may be caused by residual moisture that can build with partial cooling. As far as the thermistor readings. The thermistors may have an issue if you are not getting any resistance. Even though the thermistors may be faulty with the compressor running the unit should be cooling. You would have more of an issue with over freezing and possible freezing in the refrigerator compartment if it were just strictly the thermistors.

Curtis, If the fans are operational and the compressor is constantly running, then the control board would not be the issue. Then what you will want to look at is for a frost pattern on the evaporator coils. If there is not an even frost pattern or if the frost pattern is very little then you would have a sealed system issue. The sealed system issue could range from a leak in the system, a restriction or could be an bad compressor not pumping the refrigerant.

Hello TB, Push on both freezer and refrigerator up and down keypads simultaneously for 3 seconds. The unit will blink 0's in the display. This means in test mode. Enter freezer display to 0 and ff to 0 then hit any other pad other than up or down keypads to turn off showroom mode.

Hello Victor, It could be the main board that is at fault but you would want to check to see if you are having heavy frost build up in the freezer compartment at the evaporator coil. The evaporator coil is located at the top of the freezer compartment. You want to check continuity of the defrost heater WR51X322 and the defrost bimetal WR50X29776. If they check good then you would want to replace the control board WR55X10560 and the evaporator thermistor WR55X10025 if you are getting impacted coils. Also check your condensor coils to make sure that they are clean. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. Here is a link on how to use a multi-meter. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html

Hello John, You should check the dampers in the refrigerator compartment. Check to see if they have broken doors. If the doors are broken then you will have freezing in the refrigerator section. You can test the thermistors in the refrigerator at the control board. The J1 connector is the connector where the thermistors are located. You should have 2.8 to 3.5 VDC on each of the thermistor wires pin 1, 2, 3 or 4 to pin 5. Resistance values at 32 degrees would be 16.3kohms and at 50 degrees would be 10Kohms. You have 3 dampers in the unit if you have the custom cool. You have one at the top in the upper left corner of refrigerator compartment. You would also have 2 behind the custom cool section.
