Barry for Model Number ZISS360DRBSS

Long time customer nursing along a ~20-year old GE side by side Monogram. For past two weeks or so, freezer has been running too cold (currently -6 instead of 0) and refrigerator is running warm (currently 44 instead of 38). I was getting a lot of frost in the ice-maker chute, but had the flapper solenoid replaced and that seemed to fix that problem. Everything seems to be running normally. Thinking it may be a control board issue at this point (though I did replace it maybe 6 years ago). And/or maybe do a defrost first to make sure nothing is frozen up. Thoughts? Thanks!

1 Answer

Barry, Check the venting to ensure that there is no blockages as this would be the most common cause for this issue.

Dave, It would be more likely that the filter housing is defective and causing no ice or water.

Liz for Model Number ZICS360NRARH

My refrigerator is about 15 years old and has been working well. But now the freezer frequently is cooling too much. I set it to 0 and the fresh food compartment to 37. When I come back a few hours later the readout says the freezer is -4 or -5 and the fresh food might be up to 40. So I reset everything (using the temperature key to set it to 6 degrees in the freezer which turns everything off, then resetting the temps to 0 and 37) and that works for a day or two, then it acts up again. The freezer sometimes cools to -6. I have not looked behind the fridge because it's a built-in but the top controls and coils are clean. I think the sensors are working because they are reading the temperatures accurately?

Liz, For this issue, check to make sure that there is not an issue with the evaporator icing up because this could cause elevated temperatures but if this is good then it would most likely be caused by a faulty main control board.

Irene for Model Number ZIS360NRB

My build in GE side by side fridge has decided to turn itself into double freezer. Fresh food section is -2c to -4c and freezer is -16c. Changing temperature on the internal setting area (of fridge side) doesn't take any effect. It just stay for a few seconds and then change back to the same negative temperature. We have tried to turn it to "OFF" and turn off power for a day, clean the interior, then turn it back on. It takes a day or two but it resort back to arctic temperature again. Is this a control board issue? Thank you! Appliance model ZIS360NRB, serial # RG031427, manufacturing date 08/2004.

Irene, There is a damper in the refrigerator section in the ceiling part that you will want to try to access and see if it is stuck in the open position. This would be the most likely cause for the freezing in the refrigerator sections. The part number for the damper is WR49X10107.

Bill, at the inverter board for the compressor the red wire would be on top, White wire on the bottom, and don't forget to attach the green/yellow ground wire to the cabinet grounding screw.

Manselly for Model Number zisb360dra

Hi, ice make has been working fine recently but the freezing capability of the freezer section has been reducing to the point that ice cream has reduced to almost water. I have checked the temp sensors replacing 2 of them, continuity on the defrost heater element is fine and i have checked the defrost thermostat which appears to be operating at the correct tolerance. The firdge area seems to be ok at tempreture. Freezer currently at 17f to 14f over night. Compressor and evap fans working correctly. Drinking water is cool and crisp and ice cubes are good quality. Bottom of the freezer seems colder than the top section. Ice was present on evaporator when i inspected it, not a lot but defrosted it to be safe. I have also used diagnostic mode and all seems correct. I have a new defrost thermostat on order from you, failing this any ideas as to the problem please? Thank you.

1 Answer

Hello Manselly, based on the symptoms and your descriptions and checks this seem to be a sealed system problem. With the compressor, cond fan, and evap fan running the freezer should be able to reach 0 deg in a reasonable time. If it can only reach 14 deg at night with obviously no door openings the sealed system is not working at full capacity, one way to verify this is that the ref seems to be running constantly trying to cool down. This is likely due to a loss of freon or a compressor problem. You would need a service tech to check this further to confirm.

Oscar, You will want to check to make sure that the overload relay and the fan are getting 120 vac to them. If they are not then this will be a bad main control board which will need to be replaced.
