The Drain Pump is an OEM part for GE washing machines. It is responsible for removing water from the washer's tub at the end of each wash cycle, ensuring that your laundry is properly drained before the spin cycle. This pump helps to prevent water from sitting in the tub, which can lead to mold and mildew.

Symptoms of a bad Drain Pump include:

  • Water not draining out of the washer, leading to stagnant water pooling in the tub.
  • Unusual noises during the drain cycle, indicating a struggle or failure to operate.
  • The washing machine stopping abruptly before or during the drain phase.

Causes of a bad drain pump can include blockages from small garments or debris, mechanical failure from wear and tear, or electrical issues that affect the pump's power supply.

This GE replacement part is also compatible with Hotpoint, RCA, and some Kenmore models.

Hello Linda, Two things can cause this. Either the drain line is not elevated to at least the height of the main top of the washer or the drain is sealed where it goes into the standpipe so the weight of the water going down the drain pulls the water out of the machine, (siphoning).

Ann, Yes, if the drain hose is disconnected or lowered below the level of the top water will drain from the tub. You may want to select the final spin and drain from any cycle and allow the washer to drain the tub. After that the first check should be at the water level switch WH12X10065 and air tube WH41X365 when you replaced the timer, you may have kinked the air tube or knocked one of the wires off the switch accidentally. This would allow the washer to overfill.

Phil, We do not have information that a GE pump would work on a whirlpool unit. There is a major difference between the pumps, the one for the whirlpool pump 280187 has a trap to catch stuff that may get into the pump and the GE pump does not have this. It is recommended to use the manufacturer OEM part.

Hello Steve. There has to be a clog somewhere. Check where the drain hose attaches to the tub at the bottom of the unit. It could be clogged there. You need to see why the drain hose is not carrying all the water out of the unit.

Hello Steve. You need to look and see where the water is coming from. Then replace the part that is leaking on the unit. It could be a hose, or the pump, or even a seal leaking on the unit.
