Washer won't spin or agitate? A worn drive block often causes spinning failure. This connects the transmission to the tub. Moderately difficult repair.

For Whirlpool Washer Drive Block (Part Number: OEM18026517)

Michelle for Model Number LA8800XSWO

How can you tell if the transmission is bad. My washer will not spin out at all. It fills, washes, drains the water but will not spin just hums and the timer will advance to the rest of the cycle but will not spin out the load. Had lid switch checked, it is fine. Replaced the coupling , clutch , and water pump and all the hoses on the washer ,also put in a new transmission in Jan. of this year and all was great , now I'm at the no spin and a hum. what else can I check or change to get it back to working properly??

Michelle, This issue will boil down to one of 2 things. First you will want to pull the tub and make sure that there is nothing caught in between the tubs that would cause the unit to not spin. If this checks ok then the you would have a faulty timer.

Hello Paul, If the drive block has an issue, the notches will be worn away and when the unit stops spinning with a load in it, it will continue to spin while making an abnormal noise.

Whirlpool top load washer agitates the wash load well, pumps the water out with out any problems, but when it is suposed to go into the spin cycle, all i can hear is the motor runing. It runs until the timer times out. It leaves the clothes soaking wet. In the past I could turn the dial to restart the final spin cycle, then open and close the lid a 3 or 4 times, each time the motor would shut off and restart and finaly the spin cycle would kick in. But now it won't do the spin at all. Also I installed a new transmition from you guys last week and still have this problem. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

Hello Phil. It sounds like you need to order and replace the clutch assembly in the unit.

Hello, Recently, our washer did not spin fast so the clothers were still very wet. I purchased and replaced the clutch. (Thanks for your website and videos.) Now it seems to spin faster but not spin long enough and the rinse seems to think it is done even though there is sometimes soap bubbles still visible on the spun clothes or the inside of the basket. Several questions: 1) What else can be problem? 2) Is there a way to check the drive block without disassembly? 3) You never mention the part number or source for the drive block spanner wrench. Is there a kit that contains both wrench and drive block? 4) With the unit disassembled for clutch replacement (I took it apart again to double check my clutch install) I can spin the clutch housing counterclockwise and it eventually engages with the transmission and turns the motor shaft, but when i spin the housing clockwise, it never turns the motor shaft. Is this normal action? Thanks

Rick, The only thing that would determine the length of the spin cycle would be the timer. It sounds as though the timer is quick advancing during the spin cycle. With the drive block there is not a kit that has the spanner wrench and the drive block. The spanner wrench would be part number TB123B. When spinning the clutch counter clockwise it will engage the transmission and turn the motor shaft, this is for the spin. the clockwise rotation will not engage the motor shaft. This is the design in which the clockwise motion of the motor shaft is for the agitation and the transmission is what turns the agitator shaft.

Hello Olay. You will need to check and see if the suspension spring 285901 is bad and needs to be replaced on the unit. If it is broke or has come off the unit, you will need to re-install it, or replace it on the unit.

Hello Ben. Check the drive block WP389140 and make sure it is good and if so, you may have a bad transmission causing the issue.

On the washer drive block, there are two notched out places. When my washing machine is in the spin cycle, the agitator will turn and the washer drive block will turn. On the shaft there are two ridges. As the agitator turns around, the notches on the washer drive block will rise up on the spurs until reaching the notched out places on the washer drive block, then the agitator will drop back down causing a very loud drop sound. How do I stop this from happening?

1 Answer

Hello David. It sounds like the nut on the top of the drive block WP389140 is not tight and will need to be tightened down on the unit.

Hello Kristen. No, not unless it broke and was not holding the tub assembly down in the unit. You need to check the clutch and the drive block in the unit.
