Washer won't spin or agitate? A worn drive block often causes spinning failure. This connects the transmission to the tub. Moderately difficult repair.

For Whirlpool Washer Drive Block (Part Number: OEM18026517)

Shawn Smith for Model Number whirlpool lsq9564jq0

Originally, my Whirlpool was not agitating. I replaced the Motor Coupler and Agitator Dogs and reassembled the machine. As I ran a test cycle, the washer filled correctly, agitated correctly, but encountered a new problem when spin cycle started. There is a loud clicking noise, not quite grinding, but clearly metal "slipping" type of sound. The machine will spin with no problem, but as speed increases, the sound intensifies. I pulled off the agitator to watch the spin cycle and see if I could identify the problem. I could see the metal rod, where bolt is inserted to hold agitator in place, "slipping" (not spinning at same speed as drum). Is this a clutch issue? A washer drive block issue? Maybe something else? One last bit of info, for years, the machine has leaked a orange/red substance that I assume is grease (not a black oil). Wondering if I've finally run out of something and this is what's causing the metal clicking / slipping sound? Any thoughts? Shawn

Shawn, This issue could be caused by a faulty drive block or possibly the spanner nut being loose. You will also want to make sure that the tub is not rounded out where the drive block goes into it which would cause the same type of slipping issue.

My Whirlpool Gold washing machine is making a loud clanking noise during the spin cycle. It gets louder as it goes through the cycle; this is a consistent ping, sounding like a hammer hitting the drum. I just replaced the washer drive block and spanner nut. I also replaced the clutch assembly kit prior to that. Both parts didn't look worn, however I still replaced them and the sound remains. QUESTION: What part needs to replaced when the washing machine makes this noise? The sound still remai

1 Answer

Moe & Curley, When you replaced the drive block WP389140 did you check the "tabs" on the top of the drive tube to make sure they were still square and not rounded off ? and did you get the spanner nut as tight as possible without "mushrooming " the tub . You may need to remove the filter assembly, under the tub and install the filter plug kit 285868.and check the wire harness to insure the harness is installed in the retainer clips along the back of the cabinet and to the motor, and in the control console, a harness that is "tapping" the cabinet will make a similar type noise.

What are the SYMPTOMS which would require you to replace the "Drive Block"? I have a machine that washed fine. But when it started the Spin Cycle, it just runs with a slight clicking sound, but does not spin. I pulled the motor and transmission out. The clutch looks fine with no apparent wear or damage. The Coupler looks new also. Hand turning the clutch in one direction, I get agitation with the shaft. Turning the opposite direction I get nothing. I need an education in HOW the spin cycle works and what engages the tub. I'm guessing a reversed motor does it, but I'm not sure where this engages the tub and causes it to spin. What TESTS can I run to help IDENTIFY the problem ... and why it does not spin? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello Dorky Dan. Remove the agitator and see if the drive block is stripped out on the top of it. You will see metal shavings if so.

Robert, A couple of things to recheck for. The motor drive coupler 285753A, check the tabs on each coupler, are any of them bent, broken, or cracked. Check the basket drive and drive block, are the tabs at the top of the tube, where the drive block mounts, rounded off or distorted, and is the spanner nut WP21366 tight enough to properly secure the drive block and basket to the drive tube. Lastly, check the Clutch Engagement Cam on the basket drive, make sure its not worn or distorted, and properly secured to the drive tube.

Hi my washer is three years old I've moved a couple of times so not sure if this caused the problem. The washier will wash, then drain but when she goes into the spin it makes a very loud noise sounds like something is stripping. I've hooked up my washer last week done three loads of laundry not a problem. The last to loads I've done It made this noise and I pressed stop right away lifted the cover everything seen to be balanced then pressed start and she spun good. I got a flash light and looked under the washer and see some white plastic bits and a silver nut was on the floor and I know the floor was clean before the washer went in. Please advise

Hello Paul. Reinstall the pulley onto the bottom of the unit. Use loctite on the nut assembly for the pulley.

Darby, You'll need to check and make sure there's nothing stuck between or under the tubs. Then, lower the clutch assembly 285785 and recheck the brake drive cam to ensure it is installed properly and locks and unlocks the brake. Then lower and check the spin /drive tube assembly and check that the brake shoes are clean, and the rollers are lubed so the shoes move freely and are not held up in the drum. You didn't mention it, but you also want to check the tabs on the coupler, make sure they aren't cracked, bent or distorted.

I can't get the inner tub off of the drive block. I've tried all kinds of rust inhibitors also white vinegar to help if it is calcium build up and it still won't budge. I am trying to get the inner tub off so I can check the drive block and also clean out between the tubs and also I think the tub seal may be leaking and probably needs to be replaced but can not get the inner tub off. Banging on the part where the tub post sits on the drive block is not working to loosen it up. Newer washing machines just don't compare to this one. All the parts already put in can't be returned , hoping to get this off so I can get this repair done and back to washing.

Hello Jeff. Make sure the spinner nut has been removed so the basket will come out of the unit. If not, you will need to remove that nut. If it is removed, you need to jerk upward to remove the tub and make sure the outer tub ring is off the outer tub so the inner will come up and out of the unit.
