Donald Walker March 17, 2013 for Model Number LAT2500AAE replaced brake assembly as your previous email suggested. still no spin. pump works both directions water does drain out. agitation cycle works well. motor pulley hot with slight burnt smell on new transmission drive belt. radial bearing looked ok but i didn't check that close. installed pulley bearing dome side facing brake. turned pulley clockwise on shaft until light resistance felt ;then installed drive lug about 3/8-1/2 inch from pulley stop lug. No luck. pulley tightens by turning clockwise and comes to a stop. counterclockwise offers no resistance. clockwise means same way pulley was threaded onto shaft. assume motor is fine becausr belts spin both ways. have not replaced motor tension springs. without belts, motor slides along carriage fine. thanks but help!
1 Answer Donald, Did you remove the tub cover and check for an article stuck between the tubs ? When you turn the drive pulley clockwise, there should be some resistance, then the tub and transmission should start to turn/rotate. If you hear a high pitched click, and the tub and trans start to turn, or the pulley becomes very hard to turn clockwise and the parts don't start to turn, you have a seized tub bearing and will need to replace it and the seal 6-2095720 6-2040130. Gary January 19, 2013 for Model Number LAT8826AAE I have a Maytag top loading washer LAT8826AAE and am hearing a knocking noise during the wash cycle. I removed the front panel and found this noise coincides with the slight back-and forth movement (a couple of degrees) of the transmission. Could this be a transmission issue or a brake assembly? Along with an earlier question about horizontal wear marks inside the tub cover, I may need to replace the mounting stem and possibly a tub bearing. Are these repairs possible to perform with only a moderate amount of mechanical experience with the only special tool being a spanner wrench? Thanks!
1 Answer Hello Gary, This will have nothing to do with the mounting stem and bearing. The issue you describe is a brake WP6-2011900 issue. Read More...
Gary June 13, 2012 for Model Number mav6000aww What causes my Maytag washer to make a loud pop when the spin cycle stops? Is the break assembly repairable?
1 Answer Hello Gary, These units are notorious for the brake noise. The manufacturer says you can tilt the unit up and oil the brake to stop the noise. In my many years of experience, I have found a shortcut. You can lubricate the brake with a spray lubricant and the use of the spray tube that comes with it, you can shoot the lubricant in the brake assembly with no disassembly. Be aware that lubricating the brake causes the tub to spin longer before stopping. This will in no way affect the wash cycle or the wash result. In order to access the brake to lubricate it, tilt the machine up and lean it against the wall, (you may want to have an assistant hold the machine to prevent it's falling if on a wood or tile floor). You will see a large pulley in the center of the unit. Above this you can see the brake drum. If you look at our site where the part is illustrated as number 23, WP35-6918, the lubricant needs to be sprayed into this metal part. Inside it is the brake rotor. It's the part making the noise. Since a spray lubricant is so thin, this may have to be done a couple of times a year, but it beats putting in new parts that will do the same thing after 20 or 30 loads. Some customers have told me that the noise returned after a couple of loads. Read More...
Gary June 13, 2012 for Model Number mav6000aww The brake makes a loud pop at the end of the spin cycle?
1 Answer Hi Gary. It may be that the brake rotor lining part # WP35-6714 has separated from the assy and is loose inside the stator/rotor area. It is common that part of the lining glue comes loose. Then you need to see if the brake stator part # WP35-6918 has internal grooves in it and need replaced. You may just need to use emery cloth on it to get it smooth again if there has not been a lot of wear. Use the brake tool TJ12002011. Thank You. Read More...
Bill S April 26, 2012 for Model Number Maytag LAW9400ABW How do you remove and replace the brake assembly?
1 Answer Bill, We'd send you the Brake Package information, If you had supplied an email address. But in short, first it's best to have the removal tool TJ038315, but I imagine you could use a chisel or punch and hammer to remove it, but it won't be as easy. You'll need to raise the front of the washer or lay it on it's back. remove both belts and the transmission drive pullet. At the one o'clock position, on the damper and above the brake package you'll see a 7/8 in. hex bolts and clip, remove the bolt and clip. You can now use the tool(s) to remove the brake package by turning the assembly in a counterclockwise direction, until the threads on the brake clear the threads in the damper. You can now slide the package off the lower portion of the transmission housing and off the unit. Remove the bearing assembly from the top of the brake package by tapping on the side of the assembly, with it upside down. Reeverse the procedure and you'll be OK. Good Luck and Thanks Read More...
Mike September 12, 2011 for Model Number lat9804aae Our Maytag washing machine has severed us faithfully for 14 years now but the other day my wife called me & the kitchen floor was full of water. I took the front cover of the washer off & discovered the tub seal was leaking so I replaced the top & bottom seal. After putting it back together the washer doesn't leak but now it won't spin. We had an episode of this a week before the washer ran water on the floor. The belt was burning & I told my wife to cut it off. When I got upstairs it started up & ran fine till the water incident the next week. After the seal kit installation the pulley underneath seems hard to turn clockwise & it turns the whole tub & agitator. When I turn the pulley underneath counter clock wise it does nothing. The agitator & the tub just sits there. My fear is that the transmission has gone bad but could it be the brake/clutch assembly or just a tub bearing. Lastly I followed a you tube video on how to install the seals. Is it possible that I could have done something to cause this problem from the seal installation? I don't want to keep throwing good money into the machine if it can't be fixed at a reasonable cost.
1 Answer Hello Mike. Check and make sure the seals are installed properly. If so, based on the information you provided, it sounds like the transmission 6-2097750 may be bad and will need to be replaced. Make sure the brake assembly is releasing properly. If so, you will need to replace the transmission. Hope this helps. Read More...
Paul July 19, 2011 for Model Number Maytag Washer A412 1986 Either the transmission or brake ass. is seized up. If I can't remove the agitator(screw head is broken off) what are my other options for diagnosing the problem?
1 Answer Paul, the other method would be : raise the front of the machine, or lay the washer on it's back, and remove the belt(s). Youy need to be careful, Turn the transmission pulley clockwise, this is the agitation direction, and should be somewhat easy to turn, you may want to have someone observe the agitator operation. When you reverse the direction, counter clockwise, This is the spin direction, you should be able to turn the pulley 1/2 to 3/4 of a revolution, the brake should unlock, and the inner basket should start to rotate, there will be some resistance. If you can perform both direction tests to the brake "unlock" position, you most likely have a seized tub bearing, that's more common than a bad brake. Good Luck. Read More...

Mark July 08, 2011 for Model Number LA212 The washer tub won't spin. The drive pulley spins and just burns friction against the drive belt.
1 Answer Hi Mark. When you remove the belts, does the motor and pump turn freely? Turn the main transmission pulley and make sure your brake is not locked up. Is there clothing stuck in between your inner and outer basket ? The belt kit # is 12112425. Thank you. Read More...
