The Capacitor is an OEM part for Whirlpool washers that starts the motor by storing electrical energy and releasing it when the washer begins its cycle. This part ensures the washer operates smoothly from the moment it starts, providing the necessary jolt to the motor that enables it to begin its various functions, including spinning and agitating.

Causes of a bad capacitor can vary. Electrical surges can harm its internal components, while wear and tear over time may result in a reduced capacity to hold a charge.

Symptoms of a failing Capacitor include:

  • The washer failing to start.
  • A humming noise when the washer is supposed to begin its cycle
  • The washer starting but then quickly shutting down due to insufficient power to the motor.

This OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper and some Kenmore models.

For Whirlpool Capacitor (Part Number: OEM18040314)

Hello Sue. No, but the motor may be bad and need to be replaced on the unit. It would not be the capacitor.

Hello Washed up, The capacitor is just for start up. If the motor is running for agitate then it would not be an issue with the capacitor. You will want to check the hub nut to make sure that it is tight and check the drive bell to make sure that it is good. Most spin issues with a direct drive unit is caused by a bad clutch assembly or bad transmission.

Hello John. Based on the information you provided, you will need to check and see if the lid switch WP3949238 is bad and needs to be replaced on the unit. It should read closed with the lid closed on the unit. If it is broke or does not read closed it will cause the unit not to agitate or spin. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. Here is a link on how to use a multi-meter. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html

Hi Kathy. First I suspect you have a bad motor start / run capacitor part # WP8572720. It will usually blow out in between the terminals.Remove power. Be careful and discharge the old capacitor by shorting the 2- terminal together multiple times with a "isolated-rubber "handle needle nose pliers. After this the only recourse you have is to replace the motor switch part # WP8529896. Or the motor assy. part # WP8541504. Thank You.

Don for Model Number Kenmore 110/9203120

Just replaced the motor coupling on my washer with parts and guidance from you and your website. Thanks. Now I have another problem. It worked fine for about 5-6 washes then it would fill but do nothing else. I tested the capacitor according to instructions from the internet and it appeared to be good so I put it back together and it worked fine thru a wash, spin and fill then it would not agitate, spin or drain. The lid switch appears to be working. When the lid is closed it hums which tells me it is trying to work. My first question is: is it possible for the capacitor to work intermittently, or are there two capacitors (a start and a run)? My second question is: is it possible I have reversed the wires on the capacitor and caused this problem. My third question is: if you do not think any of these are the problem do you have another answer. Thank you for your attention

Don, I would have to think you may have a bad contact in the timer, based on the info you supplied. miswiring a capacitor does not normally create the issue you're describing. You may want to re check the wiring to the motor, and to the capacitor from the timer. Thanks and Good Luck.
