The Ice Level Control Board is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. It is an electronic component responsible for monitoring and regulating ice production in the icemaker. The board works with sensors to detect the level of ice in the bucket and control the icemaker accordingly. It plays a vital role in ensuring a consistent ice supply.

Symptoms of a bad control board include:

  • Irregular or inconsistent ice production
  • The icemaker failing to turn on at all
  • Error codes displayed related to the icemaker
  • Sensors providing inaccurate readings to the control board

Causes of a bad control board can include failure over time due to normal wear and tear, exposure to moisture or temperature fluctuations, or damage due to electrical surges.

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Jeffrey, when pressing the flapper in, there has to be a clear line of sight between the two boards or it will act as though the ice bin is full.

Hello. My Icemaker works fine for the most part. Except occasionally there is a problem where it wont stop making ice even after the bin is filled! This is a problem because it dumps ice and water all over the floor while I am asleep. Both times this has happened, its been after I dumped the entire ice reservoir into a cooler. Then the icemaker has to run continuously for appx 12-24 hours to refill the bin completely, but then it just keeps going. I read online that the bailer arm could be seized in a position telling the ice maker to keep going. So I defrosted it and everything worked fine for w while, until I emptied the ice bin for the next time. Something of note is that my icemaker control module on the right hand side does have an LED, but it has never flashed in the time I've owned the fridge (manufactured in 2001, but was in the house I moved into 2021). I took out the large board on the right and it was quite warm despite being in the freezer. So can you tell me the possible cause of this problem?

1 Answer

Doug, The large board on the right is part of the set of boards that determine how much ice is actually in the bin. Models without these boards have the bail arm on the actual ice maker that stops the ice maker from making ice. In your case it seems occasionally the boards are acting up and would need replaced. Hello Ree, open the freezer door, the right side optics board indicator light should be giving 2 flashes, then on the left side optics board close the flapper that is blocking the beam, do not block the beam when doing this, if the right side indicator light is still giving 2 flashes replace the optics board set, if it is steady then the ice maker is suspect. Freezer temp should be 10 deg or colder.

Bob, with the door open, the door switch taped shut and the optics flapper taped shut, the ice maker WPW10445782 can be tested for 120VAC from the motor terminal L to N. If there is 120VAC and the freezer is at 0°F, and the fill tube is not blocked up, then a jumper wire can be placed from the terminal T to H and this should cause the ice maker to go into a harvest mode. The jumper wire would need to be removed once the ice maker clicks and the ice maker would need to be back in it's normal position. If the ice maker fills, with water then the ice maker has failed. If there is not 120VAC the black wire at the ice maker would need to be tested for 120VAC at both sides. If voltage is not there, then the optics W11629974 would need to be tested for an incoming 120VAC at the black wire. If voltage is there, and it was not reaching the ice maker, the optics have failed.

Lee for Model Number 10658904802

No ice or intermittent. Ordered new ice maker. Easy to install. 4 batches of ice then nothing. Called back. Offered replacement. Declined because I found the trouble shooting guide on the back of appliance as your person told me. It leads one to believe the 'Flapper Door and Emitter System' is failing. From the 2 pulses being emitted I believe this system is bad. I did not follow the complete procedure because of lack of tools and knowledge. You might mention this in your Ice Maker replacement video to prevent the wrong replacement of icemaker when it is actually the emitter/receiver problem. Will have to decide on more parts or new unit?

1 Answer

Hello Lee, If the flapper on the emitter is not blocking the beam and it is flashing twice with a one second delay, the optics W11629974 are faulty.

Ted, it is recommended that the wires at the hinge are inspected for any damaged sections and that the freezer temperature is verified as being below 9°F with a thermometer. If there is a damaged wire and it is not able to be repaired, the door assembly L2255407W would need to be replaced. If there is not a broken wire, the next step would be to access the ice maker motor by removing the cover, taping the door switch down and the optics sensor W11629974 flapper down, then testing the ice maker for 120VAC from L to N. If there is 120VAC, and the freezer temperature is verified as being below 9°F, the ice maker 2198597 has failed if the fill tube has not been frozen up with ice. If the fill tube has, the failure is that the ice maker is not able to fill with water due to a leaking valve W10408179 that would need to be replaced and the ice block cleared.
