The ice auger and crusher blade crush and shave the ice that dispenses on a refrigerator. This part can be used to repair a refrigerator that is no longer dispensing ice. Sometimes when the ice dispenser malfunctions and makes a loud noise but doesn't dispense cubed or shaved ice, the problem is with the auger and crusher blade. Perform a visual inspection of the auger and crusher blade to ensure no external damage is done to the components.Disconnect the refrigerator from its power source before starting this repair. Open the freezer door to access the ice bucket and dispenser area. The bucket is held in place by fastening clips that can be pushed to remove the bucket. Lay the bucket flat on its back with the auger and blade facing upwards. Remove the old auger and crusher blade by removing the four hex screws. Remove the helix end-cap from the old auger system and replace it with the new one. Repeat these steps in reverse to install the new component. This Whirlpool ice auger and crusher is a genuine OEM product sourced directly from Whirlpool. The part listed is only available individually and is not included with any other parts or original appliances. This part is compatible with Whirlpool, Amana, Kenmore, and Maytag appliances.

For Whirlpool Ice Auger And Crusher Blade Assembly (Part Number: OEM18016686)

John for Model Number ASD2627KEW

My ice dispenser jams up all the time. I've put just a few cubes in the bucket and with the door open ran it on "chopped" and the ice goes into the auger, chops a little bit then it's like the ice is stronger than the motor and it stops the motor from turning but you hear that "stuck" sound. I put the dispenser on cube and it turns the other way and may spit out a cube or two but then a cube will get stuck in the dispenser bladed area and it stops turning and that "stuck" sound comes from the motor again. I've replaced the motor already and get the same results. is it possible that the blades are dull or something and it cannot move the ice through even on the cubed setting?

1 Answer

John, It sounds as though there may be something in the blades or the drum of the ice bin that may be broken like it may be feeding too much ice at one time. You will want to check the bin for broken parts. The blades typically will not be the cause unless they are bent or damaged.

Robert for Model Number Maytag side by side MSD2542VEW00

The ice does not dispense when depressed at the door. I did some research into the problem and I initially thought I needed to replace the auger motor. That is not the issue, it works. I pulled out the ice bin, and the auger moves freely with no ice in the bin. I think held the light button and depressed the ice dispenser and the auger motor turns at the back of the fridge. When I insert the ice bin back in and then try to get ice, all I hear is a whirling sound, like the motor is jammed. I believe that the motor is attempting to turn the auger but the auger will not turn. I am not sure if it is seated properly or that somehow it is getting jammed.

Hello Robert, You will need to empty the ice bin and make sure there are no small particles built up in the bottom of the ice bin that have frozen together and seized the auger. Use hot water to remove any sediments and re-try.

When I activate the ice dispenser I can hear the motor attempt to drive the dispenser then it "jams". If I take the ice bucket out and empty it of ice I can't freely turn the metal rod that runs the length of the inside of the bucket (I think this is what you're referring to as the auger?). Also, the coupler cap does not sit flush against the back of the bucket (I'm assuming the metal rod is binding keeping it from spinning). Should I be able to easily turn the rod in the ice bucket by hand when the bucket is out of the freezer and empty of ice?

1 Answer

Jimmy, When you take the ice bucket out and it is empty you should be able to turn the auger or the metal rod. The rod in that goes into the door should not be able to be turned. This issue sounds like the motor could possibly be defective. You can open the door and push on the light switch and dispenser lever and see if the shaft turns with the ice bin out. If it does turn and the auger is turning easily then the motor is binding and would need to be replaced.

Reginna, If there is not a metal plate on your bin then you would be able to remove the plate to get this part to work.

Lisa, We don't have any written instructions for your particular ice bin. We will be sending you some basic information that should be helpful. In short, you'll remove the bin assembly from thr frezer. Remove to front cover 67004255 from the bin(it snaps on and off), remove the nut from the end of the auger shaft, and the the screws holding the cover WP67002271 to the mounting plate. when you remove the blades and spacers, lay them out in order, then you can remove the auger and drive plate WPD7749401. install the drive on the auger shaft and insert the assembly through the opening in the back of the bin, and reinsall the other parts in reverse order. Thanks

Jordan for Model Number 596.52679201

Just yesterday my fridge stopped dispensing ice. Upon examining the ice maker, we discovered that the top end of the ice agitator had become dislodged. Based on the pictures above, I will call the ice crusher/dispenser end the bottom and the circle end with plastic the top. Normally the circle at the top wraps around that piece of plastic. In our fridge, the metal has some how came off the plastic. As a result, the agitator is unable to turn because the metal circle hits the wall of the ice bin. Based on your experience, do you think I could somehow get the metal back around the circle? My concerns with ordering the new part are 1. How difficult it will be to take the current model apart (Need to keep ice bin), 2. How difficult it would be to put back together, and 3. What caused it to happen the first time and will it happen again? Thank you for any help here.

1 Answer

Jordan, You'll need to dismantle the ice bucket assembly. Carefully remove the ice bin front panel(it snaps on and off the front of the bin) remove the two(2) bottom screws that secure the metal mounting plate to the bin front, unclip the upper mounts and slide the auger assembly out of the opening. You can then remove the mandiplate assembly and the nut on the end of the shaft, You can then remove the chopper plates and spacers and drum, You can then mount the drive block on the auger, and reverse the procedure. When you re instal the ice bin, check and make sure the drive block, is meeting and seating the drive yoke on the motor properly.

Hello Bob. Remove the water line from the bottom of the water valve and press the dispenser and see if water comes out there. If not, remove the line coming into the valve from the filter, make sure water is off first, then place line in a bucket and see if water comes out when the water is turned on. If so, you will need to replace the water valve WP67005154. If not, you will need to replace the filter housing WP67004106.

Hi Narkeisha. The most challenging issue of this part replacement is just remnoving the front white cover of the blades / auger assy. part # WP12740302. Then you just lift this part up and off the ice bin assy. and pull out from the front. Carefully look into the inside of this metal plate on the origional part and remove the inner screws first. Use a putty knife to pry the sides off to remove the white front cover. Thank You.
