For Whirlpool Dryer Igniter Kit (Part Number: OEM9282423)

Rob for Model Number RGD4340SQ1

Hi my dryer heats up sometimes but not other times. Today I let it run for 20 min with no clothes in it on what was supposed to be a 40 min high heat cycle. The first 10 min it got hot and I saw the blue flame come on through the front peep hole. But the last 10 min I didn't see the blue flame come on anymore and the dryer got cold. From what I have read, the thermal fuse does not seem to be the problem; otherwise the dryer would not heat up at all if the fuse was bad. I am thinking I need to replace the igniter but please let me know if I am wrong and its something else. Thanks.

Hello Rob. You need to check the flame sensor and the coils. Either could cause the issues you are having with the unit.

My dryer does put out some heat on occasion but then shuts down and only cold air, this is using the timed cycle; the same thing happens with the automatic cycle, in that mode the dryer will not shut off, My first thought was to replace the igniter until I saw your video about the heat sensor too. The questions I am asking is which one do I replace if not both and does the auto mode only function {shut-off] with either of both of the others are working ,or does the timer have to be replaced also.

Phillip, If the dryer has been in storage or not in use for a while, there could be debris in the gas valve burner orifice. Is the dryer converted for the proper type gas supply, Natural Gas vs. LP Gas ? and is the supply pressure proper ? If all's OK, or the dryer has been in continuous use, you'll need to check the gas line to see it isn't kinked and replace the gas valve WP8318277 it is possible there has been an internal failure in the valve.

Linda for Model Number Whirlpool gas dryer Model # LG5801XMM! this is on the dryer, I can only find last two digits "W1" not "M1" on your web page parts look the same.

The igniter will light and the burner will come on for 5 minutes or so (strong flame) then goes out. The igniter will bring the burner on again and it will go out after a short while. If I open the door and let the dryer sit for about 5 or 10 minutes it will come back on for a while. If I don't let it rest long enough it goes out after maybe 30 seconds. The igniter will keep trying to bring the burner on. None of the components are hot. Also, if I have the dryer set on "timed" it's fine, if I have it set on Permanent Press, fluff or Heavy, the timer doesn't work. The parts men are telling us it's the coil but it's not hot. My son worked for Sears for a while, he thought it might be the sensors as sometimes they get dryer sheet residue on them and they don't work correctly. But, I can't find them. I don't often use dryer sheets, but let's face it, the dryer is 28 years old and there have been some dryer sheets run through it. My son has been too busy to get over here to look at the dryer.

Hello Linda, If the gas valve opens and brings the unit up to temperature then when it cycles off, doesn't heat back up, the issue will have to be the coils 279834 on the gas valve or the gas valve 279894 itself is bad.

Hello Ralph, You might be able to get to it but is going to be a tight fit. It is easier to remove the front and raise the top and remove the drum. This will enable you to look right at it without reaching around the other components. You can try it through the lower front panel and if it seems like you cannot do it, then remove the front, top, and drum.

Hello Curt. Check the coils and see if they test good. You can test the coils using a multi-meter MA-DM1. The two prong coil will read 1,000-1,300 ohms, and the three prong coil will read 1,300-1,400 ohms across prongs 1&2, and 500-600 ohms across prongs 1&3. Test the coils after running the dryer for about 10 minutes. Here is a link on how to use a multi-meter. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html
