Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Direct Drive Washer Motor (Part Number: OEM18030759)

Larry, You will want to check to see if the motor is running or if hit is just humming. You would check the motor by testing for voltage from red to white for start and if there is not 120 vac then there is either a wiring issue or the timer contacts are not making. If there is voltage but the motor is not running but just humming then it sounds like the contacts in the timer are sticking between agitate and spin. If the motor is running then check the motor coupling to make sure it is not broken.

Hello Patrick, This is more likely to be debris in the drain pump. You need to remove the body and pull the two clips that retain the pump to the motor. Try the unit in spin at this point. If it spins normally, the pump has an issue. If not, there could be an article of clothing between the tubs or there could be an issue with the brake or clutch in the unit. Let us know if you need further assistance and if possible, for a more detailed diagnosis. please include the model number from the units' I.D. tag.

John for Model Number ATW4475VQ0 Admiral Washer

Hi, Occasionally the motor hums then cuts out when going into a cycle. If I "grab" the motor and jiggle it as to re-seat it, the washing machine will work again. The motor runs fine out of machine. It seems that something periodically binds causing the overheat safety to kick in. Is it possible for the 4 grommets and or the springs the hold the motor in place lose their stability over time causing the motor to move? I did replace the whole coupler assembly and the water pump thinking they might be causing the problem. Thanks!

John, Worn grommets or springs wouldn't cause the motor to stall or hum, it may make a little clunking noise. It could be an intermittent voltage situation. You have to maintain a minimum voltage of 105 VAC at the outlet when the motor starts, especially in the spin cycle start, have you noticed if the lights in the room dim or brighten, when this occurs, that's a good indication of a voltage issue. When you jiggle the motor, you're most likely causing the switch to close completely and the motor to run. If it's not due to a voltage issue, then it's a faulty motor switch and the motor will need replacement.

Chris for Model Number LSB6500PW2

The motor starts and does agitation and a few seconds later, approximately 20 seconds, I hear a click and it stops. I cannot restart it. I stop it and let it cool off a few minutes. Then I can start it in any setting and it will repeat the problem. When I put it on spin, after it cools off, it does the full cycle and it stops. I do smell overheating smell of a motor. The agitator turns freely left and right full cycle. Is there an overheating switch in the motor? The direct drive coupler I replaced new and did nor fix the problem. PLEASE HELP!!

Hello Chris. It sounds like the motor is bad and will need to be replaced on the unit.

Jack, Check and make sure the drain pump impeller and bearing are not seized. Then visibly inspect the capacitor WP8572717 for damage, bulging or oil leaking. The consider the timer WP8557226, there could be a damaged direction or motor start contact in the timer causing the motor to hum, but not run.

Arthur, To properly assist we would need the model number of your washer. If the unit is a direct drive unit then you will want to pull the motor and check the motor coupling. Also check the pump to ensure that it is not seized up which would cause the unit to not drain.

Hello Mike. It sounds like the brakes are locking the unit up. This is normal on some models.
