The Motor-Evap is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. It circulates cool air within the refrigerator compartment to maintain even temperatures throughout. The evaporator motor works in conjunction with the cooling system, drawing in warm air and distributing cold air via its high-efficiency fan blades.

Causes of a bad evaporator motor can include normal wear over many operating hours, damages from dust or debris buildup, and failures in the motor winding or power control mechanisms.

Symptoms of a bad evaporator motor include:

  • Inability to properly cool food items
  • Warm spots developing within the refrigerator
  • Unusual noise or vibrations from the cooling system area
  • Issues maintaining set temperatures even when cycling

This genuine OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Evaporator Fan Motor (Part Number: OEM20961795)

Franklin, The issue that you are describing will have nothing to do with the evaporator. This will require service as it is a restriction in the refrigerant system.

Buck, With an ice build-up you likely have a defrost issue. These videos will show how to check some of those components: https://youtu.be/6CDhkDujJ1k https://youtu.be/QZrQ3Y5n-o4

Hello Memo, if the evaporator defrost thermistor has shifted out of position or is faulty, it is available as part of this assembly W11452196 as per the manufacturer.

Joe for Model Number WRF736SDAM12

I've troubleshot my evaporator freezing up problem back to the bi-metal switch; when I jumper across this switch the controls allow the defrost heater to warm up. After defrosting and letting everything return to full cold overnight, running service test 6 "Defrost Heater/Bi-Metal" tells me that the bi-metal is still open. I've identified the fan assembly WPW10514110 as the necessary replacement part because it includes the switch. My question is, do you sell this switch (or a suitable substitute) separately so that I don't have to buy the whole assembly? My fan works and the resistance across the thermistor is consistent with the tech specs, so I really don't need to buy the whole thing. I could easily splice the switch into the harness.

Joe, unfortunately, the manufacturer does not show the bi-metal separately from the fan assembly W11452196. As this is the case, we would not be able to recommend an alternative.

Kelly, unfortunately, we do not have a video specific to the freezer evaporator fan W11452196. However, if the freezer is reaching the set temperature, the evaporator fan would be a less likely cause for the ice maker to not produce ice. The ice maker fan W10846539 would need to be inspected by opening the left refrigerator door and holding the door switch in while identifying if the fan circulates air. If it does, and a thermometer shows the temperature being less than 10°F in the ice bin when the door is shut for several minutes, there could potentially be a failure with the ice maker W11577195

Hello, John. If the fresh food compartment is keeping normal temperature, you may have the bad thermistor, the slowly dying evaporator fan motor or the sealed system problem. The thermistor should have resistance: at room temperature (68*) - 6.2 K Ohms and at 32* - 16.3 K Ohms. If the thermistor is good, remove the rear evaporator cover and check the fan . Next - check if the evaporator coil is evenly covered with frost. If the coil is only partially frosted you've got the sealed system problem. It that case you'll need to contact the professional tech to take care of it. Check if the sealed system is still covered under the warranty.Thank you.
