The Diverter Motor is an OEM part for Whirlpool dishwashers controls the diverter valve, which directs water flow to various spray arms throughout the dishwasher during a wash cycle. By accurately adjusting the flow of water, the diverter motor ensures that dishes are thoroughly cleaned and rinsed by optimizing coverage and water intensity according to the cycle selected.

Causes of a bad Diverter Motor can include electrical failures, mechanical wear over time, or damage from water infiltration.

Symptoms of a bad Diverter Motor include:

  • Dishes not being cleaned properly due to insufficient water reaching all areas.
  • Unusual noises coming from the dishwasher, which may indicate a struggling or stuck diverter motor.
  • Error codes displayed on the dishwasher that are related to water distribution functions.
  • Leakage from the dishwasher base

This OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper and some Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Diverter Motor (Part Number: OEM16950825)

1 Answer

Lance, the sensor would be a part of the main control W10597042 as it senses the diverter motor switch opening and closing as the motor reaches each potential position.

Steve, the lower spray arm W10859935 will need to be inspected for any clogs or debris that may be preventing it from rotating. If the spray arm checks good, then it is possible that the diverter motor W10537869 may have debris stopping it from rotating and can be checked by removing the spray arms, water tower, and the spray arm base. If there is a clog, it will need to be removed. If there is not a clog, then it is likely that the motor is not rotating due to either voltage not being supplied or the motor having failed. With the unit assembled, the diverter motor can be tested for 120VAC from the main control at connection P7 pin 4 to P7 pin 6. If there is 120VAC within the first few minutes of a cycle, then the motor has failed.

Corina, based on the information provided, it is very likely that the diverter seal has failed and is causing this leak. When the diverter seal fails, the replacement procedure is to replace the sump base (will require transferring original parts over) or assembly (will require very few original parts transferred over). Unfortunately, the model number provided is not registering within our database. If the model could be verified and posted in a new inquiry, this will allow for the most accurate information in regards to this. If the model number is WDT790SLYM3 (the same model just removing the 8) then the sump base is part number WPW10455268 and the entire assembly is part number WPW10605057.

Machine was leaking and would not fill properly. It is only a few years old! The detergent is not washed from dispenser. Replaced fill valve, diverter motor and turbidity sensor. Leaking stopped. Washes intermittently. Noticed that the connector on one side of diverter motor was heavily corroded- green copper oxide. Tried to clean with bronze wire brush- not successful. There are no connectors or cable assemblies listed as parts. Is this available? Please advise cable assembly part number for blue and red connection under diverter motor video.

1 Answer

Bryan, These connectors will not be available as separate parts and would need to get the main wire harness for the unit to correct the wiring. The part number for the harness is WPW10612062.

Paul, the diverter motor kit does not come with the grommet seal. To get the seal and the diverter motor together, the entire sump assembly WPW10605058 would be needed.

Gedi Coder for Model Number KDTM354DSS4

Hi, This dishwasher is 2 yrs old. suddenly stopped washing. It gets water inside but does not spray, and at the end it drains. I've run a couple tests, to see that water gets in properly and it drains completely, but not spinning. I've taken the spray handles, and covers, no debris at all. I put the washer on its back and checked the motor is very hot and I cannot feel any obstruction in the rubber pipe connecting it to the washer (next to the diverter), but the diverter is not hot. I've read here that the diverter could be the culprit. How could I tell? Should there be a jet of water shooting inside even if the diverter is not working? Thank you for your help.

1 Answer

Gedi Coder, If the wash motor is not coming on and running, it needs to be replaced,, especially if it is real hot to the touch, that means it is getting voltage. The diverter motor just directs the water flow. The part number for the sump/motor assembly is W10805015
