The Diverter Motor is an OEM part for Whirlpool dishwashers controls the diverter valve, which directs water flow to various spray arms throughout the dishwasher during a wash cycle. By accurately adjusting the flow of water, the diverter motor ensures that dishes are thoroughly cleaned and rinsed by optimizing coverage and water intensity according to the cycle selected.

Causes of a bad Diverter Motor can include electrical failures, mechanical wear over time, or damage from water infiltration.

Symptoms of a bad Diverter Motor include:

  • Dishes not being cleaned properly due to insufficient water reaching all areas.
  • Unusual noises coming from the dishwasher, which may indicate a struggling or stuck diverter motor.
  • Error codes displayed on the dishwasher that are related to water distribution functions.
  • Leakage from the dishwasher base

This OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper and some Kenmore models.

For Whirlpool Diverter Motor (Part Number: OEM16950825)

Chris, if the dishwasher will not start up and wash, you will probably need the wash motor. Part number is W11032770, the diverter motor directs the water flow, the wash motor is what builds up pressure in the sump and causes the water pressure to spin the spray arms.

Chris, The diverter motor would be the most likely cause for the unit to not circulate the water if the circulation motor is running and there is no obstruction in the pump assembly.

Missy, is the diverter plate installed properly ? Can you hear the wash motor running ? Remove the filter basket and the screen in the bottom of the tub, check for any obstructions or debris in the wash pump housing. Start the dishwasher, allow it to fill and wash for a minute or two, unlatch the door, remove the lower rack and measure the depth of the water in the tub. It should measure 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch deep. If the water level is too low, there's not enough water/pressure to properly rotate the spray arms.

My dishwasher hasn't cleaned well from day one but now it doesn't clean at all. It is just over 2 years old. I have checked everything. It fills with water. It drains. But it is not putting water through the spray arms. After running it, I got the spray arms to work once by accident when I opened the dishwasher to check it because I didn't hear much noise. When I closed it, they all of a sudden came back on. The spray arms are not clogged. We looked at the lines underneath and they do not appear to be clogged. We removed the spray arms and we could not hear or see evidence that it was putting water out. I did a reset by turning off the breaker. We suspect the diverter motor part #W10476222. Thoughts? Also, I am seeing a lot about the grommet - should we replace that and if so, are they still not selling the grommet individually. And finally, there is a substitute part #W10537869. What is the difference in the two parts (except cost)? Seeing so many problems with this part makes me wonder if it was a bad design and the substitute part is a redesign and better?

MusicCityMissy, Based on the information this would be a faulty diverter motor that would be faulty. Unless the seal is leaking you would not need to replace the seal.

Nik, take a close look at the hose that runs from the circulation motor to the sump housing, it is a small black hose that is at a 45 degree angle, sometimes it will come off or get loose, you can get a different type of clamp and re-attach it.

Brian, If you are suspicious about the diverter motor you can check pins p7-4 and p7-6 for 120 vac or a resistance check between same pins disconnected from control for 1100 to 1400 ohms using a multimeter. Wash motor is pins p5-1 and p5-2 and still looking for 120 vac.If these tests don't show voltage coming from the board then control needs replaced. If the voltage present check the component for loose connections and the voltage at the component also for wiring problems [loose or broke]

Brian, The W10537869 diverter motor assembly is a good possibility, based on your post description and information. You may want to remove the lower kick plate panel, remove the tech sheet from the back of the panel and conduct the Service Diagnostics with Error Codes, and verify the diverter has failed or malfunctioned
