Causes of a bad Diverter Motor can include electrical failures, mechanical wear over time, or damage from water infiltration.

Symptoms of a bad Diverter Motor include:

  • Dishes not being cleaned properly due to insufficient water reaching all areas.
  • Unusual noises coming from the dishwasher, which may indicate a struggling or stuck diverter motor.
  • Error codes displayed on the dishwasher that are related to water distribution functions.

This OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper and some Kenmore models.

For Whirlpool Diverter Motor (Part Number: OEM16950825)

Bill for Model Number WDF775SAYM0

I have a leak that I have narrowed down to the diverter motor p/n W10537869 (AP5650272). The leak is significant, coming from the plastic housing, and is a rapid series of drips but less than a steady stream when the dishwasher starts the wash cycle. Reading the Q&As it sounds like the seal p/n WPW10195677 (AP6016787) is the problem. The part page refers to the part as a grommet. Is it a seal or a grommet? I am assuming the seal rides on a shaft. Is the shaft also available and is it necessary to replace it along with the seal? And one last question, are these parts applicable to model WDF775SAYM0? Thanks.

Bill, This is called a grommet but is a seal and the only way to get the shaft would be to get the diverter motor.

Jeffrey for Model Number Whirlpool Dishwasher part# w10476222 Diverter motor

Hello, My dishwasher is leaking out at the Diverter motor in the plastic post housing that fits into a grommet and turns the lower water wand I believe. However; upon inspection of the grommet and the post, everything appears to be fine and fitting just right. Doesn't make sense to me though that water is leaking from this point. Can I put some waterproof grease inside the grommet/post location? Or could there be a crack in the diverter motor's post and the water is leaking through that crack?

1 Answer

Jeffrey, You will not want to use a grease or anything on this and even though it looks ok the grommet would need to be replaced. The part number for the grommet is WPW10195677.

Brad, We wouldn't expect to be able to turn the diverter motor shaft and suspect that you'd create more damage if you did. The W10537869 motor and WPW10195677 seal are in stock and available at this time and will need to be replaced. Thanks,

Tim, The diverter motor leaking would not cause the unit to not completely drain. You will want to check the pump impeller to make sure that it is not damaged and to make sure that there is no clogging in the drain pump.

John for Model Number WDF750SAYM0

Dishwasher does not fill any water. I replaced the water inlet valve, and that did not help. I hear just weird clicking noise and it would not fill any water at all. Sine I wasn't sure where the clicking noise was coming from, I tried disconnecting the wires to the diverter, and it didn't make any clicking noise. Does that mean the diverter motor needs to be replaced? If so, is W10476222 the right part number. What is the purpose of the diverter motor? How can I test if the diverter motor is functioning properly?

1 Answer

John, Yes the clicking noise would indicate the W10537869 diverter motor sensors aren't producing the data back to the control board, it could also be the cause of your no fill problem as well. the control board has to see the diverter in a certain position in order to operate and fill properly. If you remove the lower kickplate panel, you should find the tech data sheet attached to the back of the panel, you can program into the diagnostic mode and check for the diagnosis error codes, it'll help in directing and confirming the problem.

Gilbert, With the seal leaking you would definitely need to replace it which is part number WPW10195677. Since it has been leaking on the diverter motor, it would be a good idea to replace the motor as it will have a tendancy to fail from the exposure to the water dripping on it over time. The part number for the diverter motor is W10537869.
