Hello John, The issue is most likely either a coil is bad on the gas valve or the gas valve is bad. I would provide part numbers but this is not possible without a model number. If you would like us to look the part numbers for you, you can either re-post with the model number or you can call us at 1-877-477-7278 and one of our representatives will be happy to look it up for you with the valid model number.

Robert H. for Model Number WED9600TQ

My Whirlpool Duet dryer would turn on with Control times but not actually heat or turn. I had local company come out and they replaced the over heat cut-off that was breaking when the unit got to hot. It worked one time and then broke again. They come out and fixed it again and said my unit wasn't ventilated correctly after the unit has been working flawlessly with the same vent for 4 years. They replaced it again and the unit is running but it gets very hot and the clothes get very hot to touch. We even tested the unit just venting without going out the house pipe and the unit still gets very hot. They say because it isn't vented correctly but they haven't checked anything like the Thermistat or sensor that turn the element on and off. Could they just be getting hotter & hotter causing the unit to over heat and shut off.

Hello Robert, This sounds like a poor, restricted, or crimped exhaust duct to me. The clue is that the duct should provide an escape for not only the heat, but the lint and moisture also. You see, the dryer drum is riding on a felt seal. If too much back pressure is built up, the pressure is blown past the felt seals into the cabinet where all of the electrical and mechanical components are located. This will blow the thermal cut-out and quick cycle the thermostats, causing an extended dry time while also causing premature failure of the mechanical components. I realize you said the unit has worked in the installation for a long time but this is no indication that there hasn't been a change with the ducting. The first thing I would do is check outside at the flapper door. If the flapper cannot open, or if there is a screen at the flapper that is stopped up, this will cause the issue. If the ducting is flexible, it can fill with water under the house or the flex duct can be crimped behind the unit if the unit has been pushed back against the wall. The only thing that can open the thermal fuse or the thermal cut-out, is heat. This is why I'm inclined to believe that a ducting issue has come into play.

J, It won't cause any harm, to bypass the thermal cut off. But it's AWFULLY DANGEROUS, and should'nt be done, longer than to varify the component has failed.

Ric, Are you sure you have 220-240 VAC at the terminal block on the back of the dryer ? Is there a reason you didn't check or replace the thermal cut off and hi limit switch on the heater assembly 279973 ? You may want to conduct a live voltage test at the element terminals, with the dryer running and in a heat mode, but be careful, don't "zap" yourself. Good Luck

Hello Alex. Check and make sure you have 240 volts coming to the dryer at the terminal block and make sure the block is not burnt. Check and make sure the unit is not set to Air Fluff. Also check the heater and thermostats and see if they are good. You can test these with a multi-meter MA-DM1. They should read closed for continuity. Here is a link on how to use a multi-meter. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html

Hello James, As long as the duct is short and straight as possible and there is no harness issue between the thermistor and the main control, there are only two possibilities in this instance. The thermistor WP8577274 is electrically stressed and sending incorrect information to the control board OR the control board WP8546219 has an issue causing it to misinterpret the information sent to it by the thermistor.

Hello Sean. Remove the top panel on the dryer and make sure the power is disconnected. Then look for loose wiring connections on the control. If there are no loose connections in the unit, but you have to reset the unit to use it, you may need to replace the control WP8558756 on the unit. Based on the information you provided, it sounds like the control unit will need to be replaced.
