Symptoms of a bad basket drive can include:

  • The washer fails to agitate or spin clothes properly

  • The basket no longer rotates smoothly
  • Excessive vibration is noticed

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Basket Drive (Part Number: OEM17957460)

1 Answer

Hello Mike, This can be caused by the clutch slipping, a brake that is not releasing, something in the drain pump, a loose connection on the motor capacitor, or even a failing lid switch. You will need to remove the cabinet and bypass the lid switch and run the machine to see if the problem will occur during operation if it turns out to be electrical. You will have to drop the gearcase to check the clutch and brake assemblies. Let us know if we can assit further.

Ray Baker for Model Number ETW4400XQ0

I have direct drive top loader that fills and spins just fine but the bottom agitator is weak with just water and doesn't agitate when clothes added. It sounds like it's trying but barely moves. A repair technician diagnosed it as a failed basket drive so i replaced that but still having the same issue. I checked the motor coupling and they are not broken nor is the rubber washer cracked. The transmission was replaced about 3 years ago and the technician said it looked clean. I don't hear any loud squeaking noise during the cycles and not seeing any fluid on the ground. Not sure what else i can check next?

Ray, Check to make sure that the splines inside the agitator are not damaged and if they are not then this would most likely be caused by a faulty gearcase.

Chuck, it would be recommended that the drain pump WP3363394 is inspected to ensure it is not clogged up. If it is clogged up, it can impact the motor. If the drain pump is clear, then the motor WP661600 would need to be replaced.

Chuck, You'll need to remove the drive motor and check for excess play and "wobble" in the motor shaft and bearings, also check for any arcing or discoloration in the wires and the motor centrifugal switch.

Barry, if the spanner nut is the part WP21366, then the spanner wrench TB123B would work for this. If the model number for your appliance could be provided in a new inquiry, this will ensure that the most accurate information can be presented.

Mark, most commonly when a washer that uses a clutch and brake system does not spin well, it tends to be an issue with the clutch [WP8299642] assembly. The spring that was installed on the brake system would be the one you would want to use.

Mike, You could have a coupler going bad or something in the drain pump causing noise. Pull the casing off the washer and check the connection between the motor and transmission for a lot of black plastic shavings. Also the brake assembly might need a touch of lubricant. You can tell this if when the unit stops it comes to a screeching halt almost shifting the washer.

Mr.Mayor for Model Number MTW5800TW0

Hi, I have a Maytag MTW5800TW0 direct drive top load washer. It wasn't drying the clothes properly on spin cycle so I replaced the clutch assembly. Immediately after that it started making a scraping noise on agitation and spin cycle but did spin properly. About a month later it again stopped spinning properly so I replaced the clutch again, but this time it took away most of the noise but still doesn't spin properly. It goes into the spin cycle so it's not the timer. The drive block looks fine too. Thanks.

1 Answer

Mr Mayor, You will want to make sure that when installing the clutch you put the correct spring in place. If you did then this would likely be a basket drive that needs to be replaced.
