The Washer Drain Pump Assembly is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines. This assembly is essential for the washer's ability to drain water out of the drum after the wash and rinse cycles, ensuring clothes are properly spun and not left soaking wet.

Causes of a malfunctioning washer drain pump assembly can include blockages from small items or debris, such as coins, socks, or lint, that accidentally make their way into the pump.

Symptoms of a bad Washer Drain Pump Assembly include:

  • Water not draining out of the washer, leaving clothes wet
  • Unusual noises coming from the pump area, indicating a blockage or damage
  • The washer stopping mid-cycle due to inability to drain
  • Error codes displayed on the washer related to draining issues

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Dave for Model Number 11044932200

My pump unit 280187 needs replacing. No problem with that. My question pertains to the lack of the 'filter' unit. Is that really needed or does it attach to this replacement unit? I don't want any loose coins or something else damaging a new pump unit. Thanks.

1 Answer

Hello Dave, The only "filter" this washer has is the trap made in the screw off cap on the drain pump. This comes with the new drain pump 280187. This screw off cover is the part that catches coins and debris.

Hello Julie, The F28 error code indicates a communication error between the Central control unit (CCU) and Motor control unit (MCU). You want to check the connections of MCU and CCU. Check belt for wear. Run a cycle to verify CCU operation. Check the MCU by looking for operation of drive motor. If all this checks ok then you would need to replace the CCU.

Jonathan for Model Number Whirlpool Duet HT Front-Loading Washer

My front-loading Whirlpool Duet HT washing machine is giving an F21 error and not draining the water. I opened up the front panel to access the pump and twisted it open to manually drain out the water, however it goes right back to an F21 error the next cycle. Is the pump bad? Is "Washer Drain Pump Assembly, Part Number: AP3953640, MFG Part Number: 280187, Made by: Whirlpool" the correct part to replace? If not, then what parts would I need to replace and does it come with instructions for doing the work yourself?

1 Answer

Hello Jonathan, Based on the information provided, the first step you want to take is to check you drain line to ensure that there are no obstructions. You would then want to pull your pump out and check to see if there is something caught in the pump assembly. If this checks ok and you have good connections then you would want to change out the pump.

Hello Don, If the motor stops when pressure is applied, the motor will require replacement. You should make sure the impeller assembly has not separated and isn't just spinning on the motor shaft.

Leea, Are you sure it's "dirty" drain water ? It could be a "seaping" fill valve 205613, allowing "clean" water to drip into, and fill the the wash tub in the OFF position. There is a "slight" possibility that the siphon break 206638 has failed and allows the water to syphon back in the tub, but that also indicates you need to have your drain pipes cleaned. Try shutting off the water faucets to the washer, when it's not in use (for a couple of days) If there's no water in the tub, you have a faulty fill valve, if there is water in the tub, you need a plumber to clean the drain pipes.

Michael, First, your error codes indicate an issue in the water level switch WPW10415587 or air hose WPW10004260. A slight possibility of an issue in the steamer assembly W10172726 does exist, but start at the water levels switch and air dome hose, first. A multi meter TJMA-DM1 would be a better tool to have, you will need to test resistances on circuits and components, under non running conditions. so a straight amp probe meter won't really work.

Rob, You've done a lot of checks and repairs, and may have an inefficient drain pump 280187 , but it's not likely. At this point, You really want to start at the water level switch WPW10514214 and air dome hose WPW10004260 If the air dome hose is twisted, kinked or clogged with debris, the water level switch won't reset to the "empty" position and cause the "F2" long drain and/or the "SUD" suds detected codes. Disconnect the hose from the water level switch, check it. then blow in the end of the hose, this usually clears any debris in the hose. If the issue persists, replace the water level switch and air dome hose. Thanks
