Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Dryer Heating Element (Part Number: OEM9282771)

Judy for Model Number Whirlpool Dryer Model Number LEN2000KQ1

I am replacing the heating element. On the video, you show 3 wires that connect to the heating element. You show one top wire that goes into the black thermostat, and 2 that go into prongs on the bottom piece - one is deeper into the dryer and the 2nd is closer to outer. My drier has only TWO wires that are connected. I have one that goes into the top black, and one that goes into the prong closest to me. I do not have the one that goes into the deeper prong - appears to be an orange wire from the video. I looked around and can't find a wire that may have broken off. I took out the old heating element and it appears to be cracked so I think the problem with the dryer not heating is that. BUT I need to know if it is ok - with my type of drier - to have only two wires connected instead of the 3 that you show in the video. My order # 3549044 and the part number I ordered is WPL 279838. The dryer is 10 years old. Thank you very much!!!

Judy, Your black thermostat connects to the heater terminal, you would simply need 1 wire to the terminal on the hi limit thermostat and 1 wire to the heating element.

Deon, First make sure you have 240 VAC at the terminal block on the back of the dryer. Reset the breaker in the panel a few times, then re check. The you'll need to check or replace the thermal fuse and hi limit thermostat 279816. The thermal cut off will eliminate power to the element, if it has an "open" circuit, it is also a "one shot" fuse, once it opens, it has to be replaced.

Hello Dan. No, gas dryer uses an igniter and a burner to make the heat with the gas.

Hello Robert. It sounds like the breaker may be bad and need to be replaced on the unit. I would start there before tearing into the dryer.

Russ, Yes, you should have a resistance reading of 7 to 12 ohms resistance when you place your meter leads across the heater element terminals, with the wires disconnected. If you have no resistance reading(infinite resistance) then the element is "open" and won't heat. Of course there are several reasons why an element may fail, a weak spot in the resistance wire, a kink or sharp bend in the wire. will create a weak spot and after the electricity has flowed through the wire, the expansion and contraction process can cause the wire to separate, and stop heating. This can also occur "normally" based on usage, age, etc.

Hello Phil. If installed properly, the element will not touch the sides of the heater box. If it does, you need to replace the box, it is warped.
