Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Dryer Heating Element (Part Number: OEM9282771)

1 Answer

Rowdy, You will want to pull the heating element out of the dryer and check for arch marks on the casing like the element grounding out. If this checks ok then you will want to check to make sure that the wiring in the unit is good and no shorts to ground. You will also want to have your home circuit tested as a weak circuit could also cause this issue.

Okay so my dryer smelled like it was burning and I discovered the heating element had the center plate between the coils charred black and cracked. In the replacement video it shows the old unit as being black also. I consulted a materials expert who told me that in order to burn off the zinc layer of the galvanized steel the heating element was probably getting way too hot possibly because of too much current. How would I know that replacing the heating element won't just burn up the new one too?

1 Answer

Hello Joe. This usually happens due to a bad venting issue. It could be a kinked vent pipe, clogged pipe, or clogged inside the dryer. You need to check the dryer first on the unit. In most cases, this is the reason for the blackened plate in the heater. With a clamp on ampmeter. Using Ohms' law, you can figure the current flow with the voltage applied and the resistance of the element. If the current flow is too high, a short in the circuit exists that should be troubleshot.

My dryer stopped heating up, so I bought the heating element and replaced that. The instructions on your website mention/show three wires connecting to the lower part of it. However, when I opened up the back to get to it, my dryer only has two wires connected to it. The top wire and the right wire (right, if you were looking at the hook ups straight on, or you could say the wire closest to you.) What is this missing wire for? I looked around in the cabinet and didn't see any other wires that could be hooked up to it. I went ahead and hooked the new element up and there is still no heat. Is this missing wire the problem? or what else could it be? I saw there were mention about the thermal fuse things, but your instructions for that include using that missing wire to hook up the new designed piece... Not sure what to do now.. Thanks for any help...

Tommy, With this heating element you would just connect the same as the original. There are only two terminals on the heater and you would connect the way the original is connected.

Sara, You will want to check to see where you are loosing voltage to the heater if the heater is not coming on. You will want to check each leg of the heater for 120vac to ground. Which ever side that you are loosing power is where you would want to follow. If on the motor side then you want to check the motor switch. All parts have 365 day warranty.
