After internet search of symptoms, discovered that the hub that connects the drive shaft to the tub was stripped causing intermittent spinning which in turn caused the knocking and creating the unbalanced condition. Washer won't spin or agitate? A worn drive block often causes spinning failure. This connects the transmission to the tub. Moderately difficult repair.
Suspension bearing kit supports the tub assembly in top-load washers. Replace if bearings are worn, cracked, or causing excessive tub movement or noise.
Rubber washer that seals beneath the agitator bolt to secure the agitator to the drive shaft. Replace if agitator loosens or leaks occur. Verify fit.
