The Ice Deflector Spring is an OEM replacement part for GE refrigerators. This spring is a crucial component of the ice dispensing system, specifically in selecting between crushed and whole ice cubes. It is designed to always force the diverter back in a way that the cubes get crushed. When whole cubes are selected, the solenoid pulls the lever against the spring’s tension to shift the configuration, allowing cubes to bypass the crusher blades.
Causes for a malfunctioning Ice Deflector Spring can include wear and tear from regular use, corrosion due to constant exposure to moisture, or mechanical failure that prevents it from effectively reverting the diverter to the crushed ice configuration.
Symptoms of a bad Ice Deflector Spring include:
- The ice dispenser only dispensing whole cubes, even when crushed ice is selected
- The diverter not returning to the crushed ice configuration
- Unusual sounds during the ice dispensing process
- The need for manual intervention to get crushed ice
This GE replacement part is also compatible with Hotpoint, RCA, and some Kenmore models.

Not dispensing ice, making loud noise Dennis V. • Parker , CO • March 24, 2020
When I took it apart I found that the drive cup was cracked, the helix lock plate hole was reamed out and the ice deflector spring was broken. The biggest problem was the helix had slipped down the shaft and allowed the end of the shaft to bore a hole in the housing which made it a bear to get out. Others have had the same problem. Once I got past that obstacle, it was simple to replace all the parts and it's working like normal again. Very helpful video explaining the repair.

Ice dispenser broke and won't shut off freezer shelf support broke from sliding ice maker in and out all the time Wayne B. • Belvidere , IL • November 07, 2015
The hinge broke on the ice dispenser funnel and housing. I took them off and replace them, putting the old switches and bulb in the new housing. It took some time to put the return spring back because it does not appear in the assembly diagram. Once working, it secures to the door with 4 screws, and worked as it should. The support slide inside the freezer is held with two 1/4 in screws that were taken off with a nut driver. the rear screw is hard to get at. The new bracket just screws on, and...

12 y o rental unit ge side by side was missing parts and dispenser was non functional Scott M. • Asheville , NC • October 04, 2015
First I ordered a new ice door seal, spring, and crank, figuring the condensation in freezer and door was caused by ice door not sealing. Turns out the solenoid for the ice door was completely rusted and was the primary cause, if it had been replaced early, it would have saved the dispenser board. What then happened was the moisture in the freezer door damaged the control board rendering dispenser controls inoperative as well as the heater around the dispenser. Now the freezer door is dripping...

Ice maker would not dispense ice and chute/container would frost over Theo S. • Tallahassee , FL • October 01, 2014
When diagnosing the problem, I discovered that the ice door was not properly sealing and that the solenoid had appeared to rust/corrode forcing the door open.
I replaced most of the ice dispenser internals (solenoid, crank, door, and spring) following the video.
The door will now open when dispensing ice (which it does!), and will oddly stay open for a few seconds once I am finished, but does seal properly and the chute/container no longer frosts over.
