I read the FAQ section of Appliance Pros parts web site. I found out I needed to replace the temperature control switch, WPW10248240, to correct my problem. This switch also controls the tub filling water level based on air pressure via the attached vinyl tubing. Replacement water fill hoses for washing machines. Connect home water supply to washer. Replace when cracked, leaking, or showing rubber wear or corrosion.
Motor control board was flashing 4 times, indicating that the mode shifter had an error. I disconnected the mode shifter's wire from the controller and measured the resistance between the 2 leads with an ohmmeter. Since the reading was infinite, that meant that the mode shifter coil or in-line thermal sensor was electrically open, i.e. bad. Symptoms: Machine was spinning and spitting a dark colored oil in a circular pattern on the floor under the machine. No strange noises, just messy. This was a tricky one to figure out. The Maytag Centennial MVWC400XW4 would fill and wash, then stop before spin cycle or would not complete the spin cycle. Secures baffles to the dryer drum interior. Replace worn, stripped, or missing screws to keep baffles firmly attached and prevent rattling during operation.
I ordered two replacement baffles and screws, then lifted the top of the dryer to access the drum and installed the two new baffles. Read more

Clothes not getting clean or washplate spinning freely? Stripped plastic splines prevent agitation. DIY fix in 15 minutes—remove cap and bolt, lift out.
The plastic ridges on the inside of the washplate were stripped. New washplate solved the problem. This washer is barely 3 years old, so I guess I can expect to be doing this again, but better than buying a new washer. Read more
