I have a 12 year old Kenmore Elite washer. One day, suddenly, I heard a grinding noise and the washer abruptly stopped. I called a repair service and was told it could be the bearings in the drum of this front-load washer, or it could be the washer's drain pump, which automatically shuts down when the drain pump fails. Luckily we planned ahead when building the laundry room, as we built a water catch basin and drain under the washer, but waking up to see 1-2 inches of water is never a good sign - even if it is contained. It appears that a sleeve of a shirt was accidentally caught between the door mechanism and the bellow seal. The washing machine would allow you to program it, and all the lights on the control panel would light up, but pressing start did nothing. I tried putting the washer in diagnostic mode, but was unable to do so. The machine was not showing any fault code. I unplugged the machine. I removed the two fill hoses. I removed the top of the washer case by removing 3 tamper proof screws from the back ( I used my set of "star" head drivers), sliding the top back 1 inch and lifting the top off. I marked the 4 wires with 1 thru 4 stripes with a marker for ID, then pulled the 4 wires off the landing terminals. This should be plastered all over the place and every owner of a front end washer should be advised or a recall should be issued about this. As I opened the top of my washer to fix a F35 error by replacing the water level switch, which worked out great and it fixed the issue, I noticed a rusting spot at the bottom of the washer just under where the motor is placed. Ordered the springs and shocks. Noticed that the washer had placement for 4 springs, but the factory only installs 2 (or they forgot to install the other two on my machine). If you replace the springs, be sure to check for the spring bracket mount. You will also need those. The washer is running fine. Next I'll work on the dryer. Read more

I pulled the unit away from the wall and noticed black dust on the floor. Unplugged the unit, turned off the water. Removed back panel (about 10 screws with Torx heads) and noticed the belt was off, the drive pulley was loose and wobbling on the shaft, black dust all over the inside. Belt was worn along one side. Repairing the problem was the easy part. Diagnosing the problem took a little more time. To diagnose the problem, it took longer because I first cleaned the Drain Pump trap from all the material it collected. Socks, hair pins, and other materials that were not cleaned from pants pockets. It then still did not drain. Repeated the process after finding more materials and a toy that punctured the hose between the tub and the drain pump. Running the drain and spin cycle takes about 11... Prior to ordering parts I had pulled the pump strainer basket and cleaned it out. There was both soft and hard scale build up. The tub-to-pump hose was also pretty crusty/slimey. Still got warnings for SUDS and repeated F02 errors. Ordered parts and replaced the pump, tub-to-pump hose, interior drain hose and exterior drain hose (both hoses has some slime build up). The water standing in the tub when I emptied it the first time had very little suds but we kept getting the SUDS warning. ... Read more

Searching for paddles or baffles led me to Appliance Parts. Discovered I didn't have to buy anything in order to view the video which is a pretty nice feature to see if my skills are up to it. "How in the world do I repair something without external screws?"
