How to Troubleshoot & Replace Frigidaire AP4556791 / 316555800 Dual Element

Lift the stove top up. Note/identify wires to original element (ID #s are on the element). Pull wires off the element. Reconnect wires to proper terminals on the replacement element. (Note that the teminal positions on new element were in different positions, and this is why it is neccessary to ID and note the wires before taking them off the old element. Also, due to differences in the replacement element to the original element, the wires would not reach the terminals on the old element. Shifting the mounting clips to a different position allow the terminals to be in a position where all the original wires would reach) Reattached the stovetop lid, and the elements works fine 

Removed and replaced the faulty elements. The only tricky part was that two of the wire hook-ups were reversed on the new elements. So if you try to plug in the wires in the original orientation, it won’t work. You have to read the labels at the wire terminals to be sure they are correct. Also, there is one connection that is smaller than all the others. It will only fit on one receptacle and that will be the correct one. I bent mine out to make it bigger before I realized this and had to bend it back. 

Replacing the heating element wasn't difficult. I searched youtube to see if there was a video on how to do it just to be sure I felt comfortable doing it myself. The glass top is held on by 3 screws along the front. After removing those, you can slide the top forward and up. I used a short 2x4 to hold the top up while I worked. The elements are held on with brackets. There is one screw on each end of the bracket. I removed those and laid it down on the insulation. The heating elements are held in with clips. You will need those clips to install the new one. So don't break them when removing them. Each clip has one screw holding them on the element. Make note of the placement number of the clips. As others have mentioned. Keep track of what wire went to which wire lead. 1a,2a,1b,1b. The replacement part had the leads in different places. But they are marked. When putting back together I had to move the clips one number over because the wires are just long enough to reach the element. I did need a second set of hands to reattach the element bracket. Other than that, I was able to do this on my own. 

I diagnosed the problem to determine if it was the switch or the element by checking continuities with a multimeter. Results pointed to the element, so I replaced the element. The only complication was that there was one wire (1b connection) that was too short due to the redesign of the new element. The old element had a 4-inch wire that connected to the 1a tab on the limiter, which was eliminated with the redesign of the new element. I used that wire to create the extension by adding a male disconnect to one end of the wire (there was a pre-existing female disconnect on the other end). It worked perfectly! I checked continuity again which showed all was good. The burner works great. 

I did not use a meter to test voltage to these parts but instead just ordered replacement parts. The replacement of the oven element was simple; however, the stovetop element was a bit more involved to replace. The new element I received was not quite the same as the original manufactured part. CAUTION...you have to pay particular attention to the etching numbers on the ceramic part that has the male connectors to ensure that you have the wires properly attached. My mistake was that I had 2-wires improperly connected which caused me to accomplish a do-over...LOL. However, with the assistance of the AppliancePartsPros.com online chat, my problem got resolved quickly and the dual-element worked great. 

Ordered a replacement element 

Spoke with Michaela and she walked me through it. I had put the wires where I thought they went from the broken model to the new one. It was not correct and Michaela helped walk me through it and made it right. The first time! Awesome! Also, the part came from Maryland, I think and had to travel to Nevada Fed Ex. The box had fragile, stack on top, marked on it but one of the sides were crushed on the box and tore open. It was taped shut. Looks like FedEx did that. The part was still in the plastic wrap and seemed undamaged. (and it worked after we got the wiring right). Thank you guys for being there and we appreciate you. David and Susie 

I ordered the parts from AppliancePartsPros.com. They both were a very easy fix. 

Pulled stove out and unplugged unit, 2 screws above oven door to take out. Raise top hood and prop. Removed burner bracket on one side, unplugged wiring and removed. Installed new burner. 

We tried to hook it up without success. We then called in for support. We spoke to a representative who was extremely patient and knowledgeable. She walked us through the changes that had happened on our stove which made our attempt unworkable. It is working great now. We so appreciate the help we received. Thank you!
