The Suspension Rod and Spring Assembly is an OEM part for GE washing machines. This assembly is crucial for maintaining the stability of the washing machine drum during the wash and spin cycles by absorbing vibrations and reducing movement.

Over time, these components can wear out due to frequent use, heavy loads, or unbalanced loads that place excessive strain on the rods and springs. Replacing a faulty suspension rod and spring assembly ensures the washing machine operates smoothly and quietly.

Symptoms of a bad suspension rod and spring assembly include:

  • Excessive shaking or vibrating during wash cycles
  • Loud banging or knocking noises
  • The washer moving or walking during operation
  • Uneven or off-balance loads causing the drum to tilt

This GE replacement part is also compatible with Hotpoint, RCA, and some Kenmore models.

Don for Model Number WCSR4170G0WW

My washer, on the agitation cycle, will bang as the bottom ear will bang on the base part. Thinking it was the shock absorbers, I replaced these, but still banging, on closer examination, I see that the tub is now hanging down too low -- by a fraction. This is worst on super full loads, but I have always done super loads. So, two questions: Do the springs get "tired"? I was able to hammer down that floor plate a little bit, and the agitation now clears it, but I'm sure this is not how it's supposed to be, in original design. All four are equal (i.e, no springs specifically broken), which is why I'm wondering if the springs shrink over time. And question two, which parts do I need, green in front, and black in the back? Might the front two be enough? Thanks!

Don, You will want to check the apron of the washer where the rods attach to. It sounds as though this may be flexing causing the washer to drag on the base. If this is the case then you could install part number WH49X20925 to correct this issue.

Felicia, while it is normal for the tub to sink as it fills with water, the suspension rods can wear over time and not allow the tub to stay balanced. The suspension rods can be tested by pressing down on the tub as far as it will go (while it is empty). Once it is pressed down, quickly release it and it should rise back up without bouncing up and down. If it does bounce up and down, the suspension rods are failing and would need to be replaced. There are two sets of suspension rods, two of the front suspension rods WH16X10141 and two of the rear suspension rods WH16X10057.

My machine was making a ton of noise during the fast spin cycle. When I opened up the machine I found the mode shifter had failed, so I replaced it a long with the tub bearing and all nuts\washers in the vertical assembly. Now the machine wobbles and appears to be off balance during the fast spin cycle again. It's really bad at first but settles a bit after a few seconds but still isn't as smooth as it should be. Is there a way to test the balancing rods or could there be something else wrong?

1 Answer

Hello Daniel, I would replace the suspension rods WH16X10158 X2 and WH16X10159 X2, if the motor mount is not contacting the main base at the beginning of drain and spin. Also check the leveling of the unit and the damping straps WH01X39337. Also verify the balance ring WH45X10114 has not lost the liquid solution.

Hello Terry, This can be caused by several things. The most common cause is a weak suspension spring W10780048. All four have to be replaced since one weak spring will cause the condition. Another cause is if the unit is not sitting with the weight of the machine equally shared by each of the four legs or if the floor is weak. The last thing, besides not enough items in the load would be a loss of the saline solution in the spin basket W10349185.

Hello Pramod, This is quite possible a weak suspension rod, two WH16X10057 for the rear and two WH16X10141 for the front, causing this issue. It can also be due to an imbalanced load due to loading practices. When loading the unit the manufacturer recommends to add each item, one at a time, around the agitator so the unit can achieve a blaanced configuration. A very small load will also cause bunching of the clothing on one side of the spin basket.
