The Drive Belt is an OEM part for Whirlpool front load washing machines. It transmits power from the wash motor to rotate the tub assembly, tumbling clothes during cycles. The belt is designed with deep grooves to securely grip the motor and tub pulleys. It measures 48.22” long uninstalled and will stretch to 51.53” when installed.

Causes of a bad Drive Belt can include cracks developing from repeated flexing during operation or stretching over many years. Debris trapped in the belt path can also wear down the belt prematurely.

Symptoms of a bad belt include:

  • The washing tub failing to spin or agitate clothes
  • Abnormally loud squealing noises from inside the machine
  • The belt slipping off pulleys during cycles

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, and select Kenmore front load washers.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Drive Belt (Part Number: OEM18062250)

Bulldogchief, While this could be a potential belt slipping issue, it would be recommended to pull the bottom front panel, the rear panel and the top panel and try to determine where the noise is originating from. This could also potentially be from the springs on top.

Steve, You will want to check for a broken spider arm as this would be the most likely cause for the unit to have the gray residue at the front on the drum.

Hello Marco, The belt you ordered WPW10388414 is the correct part and will appear to be too tight so the pulley has to be rotated to install it. This is intentional by the manufacturer to ensure there will be no slippage.

Hello Mitch. Check and make sure the large pulley on the unit does not have a lose bolt. If the bolt is tight, and the pulley is not stripped out, you will need to replace the outer tub W10772617 and the inner basket WPW10250573 on the unit.

Russell, It sounds like there is a possible issue with the bearings that when there is a load on the unit it is causing the groaning, grinding type noise. This would require the replacement of the rear tub.

I have had this front load washer for about 7 years with no maintenance other than my wife's ritualistic cleaning of the seal etc. to keep it smelling clean. It operates normally but, when beginning to spin and when slowing down it has a horrible knocking noise that varies due to speed. The washer is level and on a slab surface so I know it has to do with a worn out component. I am getting a belt and would like to know what additional items I should get. By the way my wife uses it at least twice a day everyday. It has had a hard life but she loves it.

Hello Daniel, You may want to check your inner tub to make sure that it is not moving. When checking you will pull up on the inner tub and if it moves inside the outer tub more than an 1/8" Then you have bad tub bearing and would need to replace the bearings. Also there may be something in between inner and outer tub that could be making noise.

My belt has been falling off and now it has snapped. When I put the belt back on the pulley, before it snapped, it seemed to track toward the tub and not stay in line. I noticed that the belt has ridges that fit with the motor pulley and the tub pulley has no ridges. Also, I checked the tub pulley and motor pulley, both seem to be firmly attached. Other than the obvious need for a new belt, is there anything I can do to get this belt to track properly so I do not have to continuously replace it? This will be the second belt this washer has eaten in two years.

Hi. Make sure the motor and the main pulley both are mounted tight with absolutely no slop. After you install the belt part # WPW10388414, look down at the belt to see if the belt is riding in the center of the motor pulley and the large main pulley. Rotate them a few times to insure that the belt still rides on the pulleys together and adjust as necessary. Thank You.

Alan, We would not expect the belt to be the issue at this point. If the belt is "falling off" and you're sure the pulley shaft nut is tight and locked in place, you'll need to check the motor mount bolts and tub assembly to make sure the assembly and bolts are not loose. Also check and make sure there is no side to side play in the tub bearings and tub basket shaft. If the washer is on a solid floor, properly leveled, and not being overloded, you'll need to check the tub dampening assemblies WP8182703 and see that they are not worn, or loose.
