Washer won't spin or agitate? A worn drive block often causes spinning failure. This connects the transmission to the tub. Moderately difficult repair.

Hi Marshall. This part is called a drive block. Part # is WP389140. This is a normal part that breaks while overloading the unit. After you remove the inner tub basket you will be able to use a set of needle nose pliers to reach in and grab it out. Thank you.

Dave D.

I just removed the drive block from my washer and the upper part has obviously broken off. Small chips of metal are all over the grease on the drive/brake shaft. I plan on replacing the drive block but I am not sure if there is something else that caused this part to fail. The clutch also has been getting very hot (but nothing is obviously broken). That is how we realized the machine was in need to work. Basically I want to know what could cause the upper lip on the drive block to break and how to prevent that from happening on a new block.

Hello Dave. Over time the drive block WP389140 will break down and fail. You can check the clutch by turning it by hand. If it releases properly, then it should be ok. Based on the information you provided, it sounds like the drive block is bad and will need to be replaced. Hope this helps.

Brion, Usually a bad drive block or worn spin tube tabs will make a few(2 to 4) loud knock noises, when the tub stops or starts spinning. Usually you only need the "drive block" WP389140 but if thee spin tube tabs are rounded off, sometimes you can "square" them up with a file and get by for quite a while. Thanks and Good Luck.

Hello Abbie. Tilt the washer back and look under the bottom. Between the motor and the transmission is a motor coupling 285753A. Check and see if this is broke. If so, you will need to replace the motor coupling. Hope this helps.

Hello Dennis! If the motor is running and the unit is not spinning check the lid switch assembly 3949247V. You should hear a clicking sound when the lid is being shut, this indicates that the switch activates. Hope this helps!
