Symptoms of a faulty clutch kit are:

  • The washer tub failing to turn or agitate clothes during wash cycles
  • Delayed starts or intermittent rotation

Dennis for Model Number 110.20232711 Kenmore washer - top loader

Trying to help my elderly brother during the virus shut down. Kenmore (Whirlpool) top loader washer. Model 110.20232711. "Splutch type" drive. Makes a very loud metallic grinding noise when trying to agitate. It went through automatic and manual tests. Had fault codes for motor and shift. Spins OK (both low and high). Took "Splutch" assembly apart and all looks OK. The spring mechanism moves in and out freely. No damage to any of the teeth or splines. The motor rotates OK in spin. When in agitate direction the loud noise is heard. When moving the washer there was a dry brown stain on the floor and it is under the gearbox assembly also.

Carol, if the motor can be heard during operation but there is no spin or agitation occurring, the drive belt WPW10006384 would need to be inspected to ensure that it is intact. If there is no motor operation at all, the unit would need to be placed into a diagnostic mode to allow for the retrieval of any error codes as well as entry into the manual test mode. This will allow for the best identification as to which circuit in the system may be causing this issue.

Hello Jose, this is an electronically controlled washer. It came with a Test Sheet that will allow you to run diagnostic and test cycles as well as a calibration cycle. It is located in a plastic bag. located behind the front cabinet panel near the top. If the control board is detecting a problem in the cycle it will have a fault code(s) stored in its memory.

Farley for Model Number Whirlpool Washer W102805461 # on the manual

Hello, Thanks in advance for your help. I already replaced the splutch kit on my washer and I’m still hearing the ticking noise between the wash and spin cycles. Also very recently the washer does sound like an airplane taking off during the spin cycle. I suspect this is the motor bearing. This washing machine is about 10 years old and has seen heavy use. I guess my question is is it worth fixing whatever is still causing the ticking and changing the bearing compared to just buying a new washing machine. Thanks for your opinion. Thanks, Farley

1 Answer

Farley, So the loud noise would be the bearing. The gearcase comes with the bearing on this unit and not able to be replaced any other way. About a 200.00 part. The ticking is probably the actuator not shifting from agitate to spin. Another 40 dollar part. So upwards of 250.00 on an older unit is a pretty hefty repair bill. I would price a similar unit that is new and make a decision.

Jose', Yes the " making a squeaking noise for about three seconds and it quits" could be and most likely is the W10721967 Splutch assembly "slipping" and not engaging properly causing the noise. You will also want to check the WPW10006355 Shift Actuator for proper movement and that the shift arm and shift ring on the splutch are properly engaged.

Brian, The tub is not supposed to spin when in the agitation cycle. The tub will only spin when in the spin cycle. If the tub is not spinning in the spin cycle then check for error codes using the tech sheet and it may be an actuator issue.

Mk, the most likely cause is going to be the gearcase assembly W11454372 bearings are failing. The unit will need to be inspected for any loose fittings to ensure that there are not any possible chain reactions. Once everything is verified as being secured, this will leave only the bearings in the gearcase as the possible cause.

Hello Austin, this sounds like a mechanical problem, start by removing the wash plate in the basket, check if the shaft splines are worn out. Then access under the washer and remove the belt guard and check the belt, pulleys and splutch assembly, if all check ok then there is a gearcase problem.

Hello Paul, there are a number of possible problems for this, your washer came with a Tech sheet, it is located on the inside behind the front cabinet panel near the top in a plastic bag, run the Fault code display mode an see what fault code it gives, you can also run a number of component and function tests to determine the cause,if you are not sure of what the code refers to repost your question with the code.
