The Drive Clutch Kit is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool washing machines. As an integral transmission component, it includes the clutch that engages the drive motor to rotate the central agitator or impeller.

Causes of a bad clutch kit include worn parts that have aged from repeated use. Signs include slipping, grinding, or clicking noises from the transmission area.

Symptoms of a faulty clutch kit are:

  • The washer tub failing to turn or agitate clothes during wash cycles
  • Delayed starts or intermittent rotation
  • Vibration or shaking sensed from the frontloader or toploader

This OEM replacement is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

For Whirlpool Drive Clutch Kit (Part Number: OEM17853897)

Jenn, It would be recommended to check and see if the splutch pulley is loose and if it is then put some Loctite on the threading and put the bolt back on.

Hello, after the washer fills and agitates there is a loud chirp plastic grinding noise. I bypassed the lock and everything looks normal inside. If you can open this link this is the sound https://streamable.com/5wyy5d I don't know if it's the splutch or a bad bearing. I'm tearing my hair out. Everything else runs normally, maybe I need new springs as well the drum can be moved back and forth by hand unless thats normal. Thank you for your help

1 Answer

Sean, Couple things to check. Remove the wash plate and make sure the teeth on the inside are not rounded off or damaged. If they look gooed replace the splutch. A little blue loctite on that nut for the pulley will save you on down the road.

We heard a loud, plastic grinding noise one night during a wash cycle. The problem seemed to be the splutch cam kit, so we replaced that. Now when you start a cycle: (1) the lid locks, (2) the sensing light turns on, (3) the machine makes a rapid, dull, clicking noise for a few seconds, (4) sits there and does nothing for a WHILE (like 45 minutes), (5) until recently, it would then fill up with water and let the clothes soak and then drain without spinning but in the last few days, it has stopped filling up with water and will usually pause itself and just sit there with the sensing light flashing. I tried to check the fault codes and I believe it gave me a motor fault (F7E6) but I am not sure. I tried to reset the motor and I tried to do auto-calibration but nothing seems to be working and the functionality has become worse (it used to at least fill up and soak clothes, just not spin, but now it doesn't even fill with water).

Rudy, it would be recommended that the wires at the motor area are inspected to identify if a wire has come loose. It would also be recommended that the splutch shifter is checked to ensure that it is aligned properly. Unfortunately, the model provided is not registering within our available database. If the model could be verified and provided in a new question, this will allow for the most accurate information to be presented.

Michael, The loud noise in spin is from the bearing. The bearing only comes with the gearcase on this unit so you would need to order part number W11454372

Jos, this can be caused by a few things. If there is an error code that appears, this can be used to readily identify what the potential cause may be. However, the lid lock W10404050 can be tested by unplugging the power cord and accessing the main control in the console. At the connection J15, the lid lock would be tested from pin 1 to pin 3 for a resistance between 85O to 155O. If it passes, the next step would be to test from pin 3 to pin 2 for continuity and there should be continuity when the lid is closed. If the lock does not pass both tests, it would need to be replaced.

The drive shaft for the washer plate is part of the gearbox assembly and can only be replaced by replacing the entire gearbox. Here is the gearbox that is for your model number: https://www.appliancepartspros.com/whirlpool-gearcase-w11035751-ap6039978.html

Tracey, Check the splutch pulley on the bottom of the unit to make sure that the nut has not backed out which would cause the pulley to be loose. Also, check to make sure that there is a solution in the balance ring. If this checks ok then check for a wobbly shaft of the washer. Also, make sure that the unit is properly leveled.

Hello Alyson, most likely the tub suspension/damper rods W11130362 need to be replaced but also check if the inner tub (clothes basket) is loose or is off center.

Shawn for Model Number MVWX500BW0

My washer won't complete a wash cycle. I can hear it running but it won't spin the clothes and then it just stops on wash and I can open the lid, but all the clothes a still dripping wet. I bought a new shift actuator thinking maybe that would fix it, but it did not. when I went to install the shift actuator I noticed what seems to be grease on the belt guard and belt. The washer will, however, spin if I set it to drain and spin. Any ideas what it could be?

1 Answer

Shawn, the grease can cause the belt WPW10006384 to slip and decrease the resistance placed on the motor. Grease would only come from a gearcase W11454372 if it is starting to fail. It would be recommended that the unit is placed into a diagnostics mode to retrieve any stored error codes. If there is not a stored error code, it is likely that the main control W11100673 is not processing the cycles correctly.
