Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Ice Dispenser Motor (Part Number: OEM18018156)

1 Answer

Dave, The ice dispenser would rotate clockwise for crushed and counter clockwise for cube. If the unit is only rotating one direction then this will most likely be the dispenser motor that would need to be replaced and would be part number WP2188242. To change you will look at the inner freezer door under where the ice bin would be and there will be 2 screws that you will remove to take out the dispenser shaft. Once this is out you will go to the first shelf under the ice bin and look up and there will be a door held by 2 screws, remove the screws and this will give access to the dispenser motor.

Hello Gwen. You will need to check the micro-switch WP2162361 in the dispenser and see if it is bad and will need to be replaced.

Every thing seems to work properly. Makes ice, fills bucket, can manually turn off ice maker switch. It is my opinion that an ice cube jams up the crusher. When I push on the ice fill lever, the motor starts and tries to turn, but then seems to bog down and stops.. Is the motor too weak to turn when auger will not crush ice cubes. Recently had a repair man working on the ice maker and he said the spacer washers for the crusher blades were installed incorrectly. Have emptied the ice bucket a couple of times and seems to work right until the bucket fills almost to the top, then gets jammed up again.

Rexann, You will want to check the ice door on the unit. If there is an air leak around this door then it will cause the unit to collect ice in the chute or cause the ice where the crusher part is to get moist and freeze together. This will cause the auger motor to bog down and not turn.

Rexann, Check and make sure the freezer is not too cold(avg air temp 3 to 5 dgrs.). Check the condition of the cubes, are they solid and in one piece(not layered) and approximately 3/4 in. tall in the center. Make sure the ice cubes aren't "sticking" together or you have ice in the bottom of the bin. Check the metal shifter arm on the side of the bin, make sure it opens and closes the bin door on the front of the bin properly. If you don't use a lot of ice, the cubes can melt and adhere to each other and jam the motor, you may want to consider a W11342242 Adjustable shut off arm so you can lessen the amount of cubes in the bin.

Lewis, The motor is a 120 VAC low torque motor, it should run in one direction only (clockwise) regardless of wiring. Recheck and make sure the drive yoke WPW10169511 isn't the problem, it could be cross threaded or stripped and not driving the auger shaft.

Jack, With there being frost under where the motor is located at, you will want to check to make sure that there is not a door seal issue. Typically when there is a frost issue, it is caused by air migration into the unit.

Hello Charles. White goes to one side and blue to the other. It does not matter which wire is where.

Perry, You will want to test power to the dispenser motor for 120 vac when the dispenser button is pushed in. If there is no power then you will want to trace power back to the dispenser. Check the connector at the bottom of the door from blue to white while pushing the dispenser lever and see if there is 120 vac there. If not then go to the dispenser switch and check the switch for continuity.

JB, You will want to pull the dispenser cover off an check the switch bracket as this is most likely broken for the icemaker side and would need to be replaced. The pins that hold the switch are most likely broken. The part number for the bracket is WP2180226.
