Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Drive Motor (Part Number: OEM16860564)

1 Answer

Doug, Thanks for the question!!! It is always best to take a quick photo or write down the wire connections before removing the old parts. If you have not done that you can check on your machine for a wiring diagram that will be just for that machine.

Why does my Kenmore Trash Compactor white plastic gear keep breaking (the hole in the middle gets stripped)? It is like the motor is not reversing soon enough. Then the compactor starts banging and I have to turn it off - then back on again to raise back up. I have put 3 gears (kit 882699) in and they only last a month and then break. Is there an adjustment screw that I can release the down tension? I have triple checked the chain tension each time I have replaced it. P.s the plastic stop rams are getting jammed (squished) on the bottom too and are curling

Dennis, Based on the information provided I don't see anything to cause this unless the items being compacted are letting the ram kick sideways and jammed.

My trash compactor made a loud noise and stopped working. I opened up the bottom and I found the large gear broke in half, also the motor just hums now and does not move. I took a wrench and turned the gear to move compactor up manually so I can open up the draw - it seems to move freely. I’m assuming I need a new motor and gear. Could there be anything else, is there anything else I should check before I order parts. What happened that the large gear broke and the motor just hums now and doesn’t turn. It’s about 10 years old and gets lots of use. Thanks Gary

Hello Gary, the motor needs to be replaced and the gear is part of a drive gear kit 882699, also there is a repair video for the kit on the part site, as to what may have caused the problem the gear may have just failed from stress or fatigue from use, it is not an uncommon part to replace on compactors, when it failed the motor may have jammed and overheated. Once both parts are replaced the compactor can be checked in use to see if any of the switches also need to be replaced.

Tom, if there is a full 120VAC going to the compactor, the motor W10439651 windings would need to be tested for resistance after turning the power supply off. The motor start windings can be tested at the top limit switch from the red wire to the gray wire and it should measure 10O. The run windings can be tested from the yellow wire at the top limit switch to the white wire of the unit and it should measure between 3O to 5O.

Hello Korene, according to the manufacturer's guide for your model, the loss of the Dense Pack feature on your model is caused by a switch failure in the drive motor, the motor is part W10439651.

Hami for Model Number KUCC151GSS1

Hi there, my trash compactor started acting up recently. In normal mode I have to hold the switch down to make it move. It goes all the way down then back up until I let go. When in full compact (locked) mode, it functions normally. I turn the nob to start and let go, and it continues down to lock. If I turn the nob again it goes all the way back up to top. However, before, while the ram was all the way down, if I flick the switch from locked to normal, this would trigger the ram to come back up, now it just stays down in the locked position unless I hold down the nob on start. I have tested the directional switch and it's working correctly. Doing the Motor Run Winding test according to the tech sheet should read 3-5 ohms, Mine is reading 1.5-1.7. Doing the Centrifugal Switch test, the sheet says it should read under 1ohm. Mine is reading 5.1.

Hami, based on the information provided, the centrifugal switch in the motor assembly W10439651 has failed and the motor would need to be replaced.

Richard for Model Number 665.1350595

Compactor cycles normally in the "Normal" position. In the "Extra Pac" mode, the ram will stop at whatever position it is in when the start knob is released. If the knob is held down it will lower completely and then return to the top. If you release the knob at any point in between the ram will stop moving and remain in that spot. The contacts in the cycle switch and the top limit/directional switch both operate correctly when checked with a continuity meter. Is there anything else I should check before order a replacement motor drive?

1 Answer

Richard, For the motor stopping when releasing the knob on then this would be a bad motor. In the extra pac mode power to the motor run winding is routed thru and extra switch on the motor centrifugal switch. This switch, (Orange/Black wire to Yellow) closes when the motor reaches normal run speed. With this switch being bad you would need a new motor.
