The Auger Motor is an OEM part for Frigidaire refrigerators. This motor powers the auger in the refrigerator's ice maker unit. The auger rotates during ice-making, ejecting ice from the mold and depositing cubes into the storage bin.

Causes of a bad auger motor can include wear and tear over time from continuous use, or damage from unbalanced ice molds or debris buildup.

Symptoms of a bad auger motor include:

  • Ice maker not producing ice or producing ice inconsistently
  • Ice cubes jammed or frozen together in the storage bin
  • Loud buzzing or grinding noises coming from the ice maker area
  • Inability to eject ice properly into the storage bin

Replacing this OEM Frigidaire auger motor helps ensure consistent, reliable ice production. This replacement part is compatible with Electrolux, Gibson, Kelvinator, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Auger Motor (Part Number: OEM21644160)

Hello Elizabeth. Make sure the freezer is between 0° and 5°. You need to check and see if there is power going to the water valve when the icemaker cycles. If so, replace the water valve on the unit. If not, or the icemaker does not cycle, you will need to replace the icemaker on the unit. Also, check and make sure the fill tube on the unit is not frozen and clogged. If so, replace the water valve and thaw out the fill tube. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. Here is a link on how to use a multi-meter. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html

I am experiencing water in the bottom of the freezer door, have checked all water lines with no apparent signs of leak. No apparent sign of leakage at ice maker. At bottom of freezer side in the back I am seeing significant amount of water in bottom on the refrigeration unit. In my investigation I did discover that we had a lot of items stuffed in the shelf above the ice maker which could have partially obscured the airflow of the unit. Could this have caused condensation occur and water accumulation in the bottom of the unit? I have had enough water accumulation that it filled the bottom and leaked out on the floor over time.

1 Answer

Wayne, The issue with the unit would most likely be caused by a clogged drain. You will want to remove the rear wall of the unit and clean the drain trough of all ice and flush drain with hot water.

Had a hard time getting the ice bin out of the door to clean out. After removing the ice tray...with a lot of difficulty, the shaft seems to be sticking out to far for the bin to fit back in. I made sure the shaft was properly aligned with the gear and it slide in perfectly...up to the screw on top...but the shaft is still pushing the bin up to high for it to lock into place and fit in the door. Also, now when I push light button and the ice lever on the front of the door, the motor turns on but the shaft does not move. Has the plastic piece on the shaft been moved down and it's not fitting in the motor now?

1 Answer

Brandon, Yes that plastic piece around the shaft has moved and you will just want to take the blunt end of a screwdriver and tap the shaft back down. You do not have to remove anything to do this except the ice bin. You will want it to be just below the round piece that surrounds it and make sure that you only tap it down to where it will sit in the motor and the ice bin will sit flush.

Steve, To remove the icemaker from your unit you will need to remove the ice bin. On the lower part of the left wall there is a cover that needs to be removed. To remove the cover you will use a small flat blade screwdriver and put into the hole that is about 1/3 to half way back. Push the screwdriver either up or down to depress the release tab. Once it is depressed slide cover forward. Should slide easily if tab is depressed. Then you would disconnect the wire harness and there is a tab on the side of the icemaker that you would pull toward the icemaker and slide the icemaker forward.

Bill, The first thing you want to check is to make sure that the switch bracket on the dispenser is not broken. In a lot of cases what happens is the pins that hold the switch in will cause the lever to not make connection with the switch. If that checks ok then you will want to check to see if the dispenser motor has 120 vac getting to it when you push the lever. If there is power then the motor would need to be replaced.

Donna, You will want to check the motor coupling and see if it is spinning freely without the motor turning. If it does then you will need to replace the motor coupling WPW10169511.

Hello Rodger, The auger motor on unit is routed from the dispenser to the control board then back up to the auger motor. You will need to check wire harness connections at the dispenser, bottom of the door, at the control board and at the auger motor to ensure that there are no broken or loose wires that could cause intermittent contact. If all this checks ok then the most likely cause would be the control board WP2322547.
