The Thermal Fuse is an OEM part for Whirlpool dryers. It is a critical safety component designed to protect the dryer from overheating by blowing and cutting off power if the temperature exceeds safe limits. This disposable, one-time fuse is essential for preventing potential fire hazards and ensuring the appliance operates within safe temperatures.

Symptoms of a bad Thermal Fuse include:

  • The dryer not starting or suddenly stopping during a cycle
  • No heat being produced while the dryer is running
  • Unexplained cessation of all dryer functions

Causes of a bad thermal fuse can stem from restricted airflow due to lint buildup, a malfunctioning heating element that causes excessive temperatures, or other electrical issues within the dryer.

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Hello Barry, You do have to take several high and low measurements, (at the exhaust), and average them together to get the average operating temperature at the exhaust. The average should read about 155°F when set to high heat, about 140°F on medium, and about 125°F on low heat setting. If your unit has an extra low setting it will average about 105°F. Be aware that if you are using a "bulb" type thermometer, it can read up to 30° higher.

James, When opening the door and the light stays off it sounds like the issue may be in the light switch. The thermal fuse would being bad would make the unit not run at all.

David, You're on target. With your description and complaint, the first check should be the WP3390719 thermal fuse. The fuse is a "one shot" fuse located on the blower housing. If the temperature increases in the blower and the fuse circuit "opens" power to the motor is interrupted and the dryer will not start or run. You'll also want to check and make sure there are no clogs ,kinks, or restrictions in the dryer exhaust pipe and vent hood.

Hello Leo. The cycling thermostat should show resistance on the small terminals and closed on the large. Check and make sure you have 240 volts coming to the dryer. Check and make sure the unit is not set to Air Fluff. Also check the heater and thermostats and see if they are good. You can test these with a multi-meter MA-DM1. They should read closed for continuity. Here is a link on how to use a multi-meter. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html

Kevin for Model Number Kenmore Model # 110 76960130

The timer on my electric dryer starts and seems to function normally. However, the motor will not start. I replaced the "push-to-start" switch (which I purchased from you) and the motor still will not start. The door switch appears to be working properly. The blower fan is intact and seems to rotate normally (turned by hand). The thermal fuse is checked "open", indicating failure. The exhaust duct is clear to the outside of the house. Do you think that replacing the fuse alone will solve the problem? Or, is there something else for me to check? What else would cause the thermal fuse to blow? The dryer was running normally, the last time we used it, before it failed to start. P.S. the dryer is about 30 yrs. old!

Hello Kevin. Yes, it should be fine, Just make sure the vent does not get kinked, and the blower wheel inside the unit is good and clean.

Troy for Model Number 110-92822100

Your suggestion for a "no display" on the front panel is a possible bad Thermal Fuse. (i will check it), However, i have light inside the tub and based on the schematic diagram, isn't it thermal fuse is to protect for overheat condition ? Feel free to correct me. Here's the deal....Machine control electronic board and Control electronic housing board are rediculously expensive. Dont want to buy the wrong part. Is there a way to test these circuit board ? Thanks

Mike, Yes when the belt breaks the unit does have a broken belt switch 279782 that does not allow the unit to operate.
