The Thermistor is an OEM part for Whirlpool brand dryers. It is a temperature-sensing resistor that monitors air temperature changes during the drying cycle. The thermistor provides feedback to the control board on heating element performance and internal air condition.

Symptoms of a failed thermistor include:

  • Inaccurate temperature readings and selections
  • Improper or incomplete drying
  • Safety issues from overheating due to lack of feedback
  • Error codes displayed on the control panel

Causes can be related to normal wear and environmental exposure over time. Failure prevents the dryer from achieving optimal drying conditions.

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Hello Scott. It sounds like the venting system is clogged or kinked. You will need to check the vent and clean it out. Be sure and clean the vent pipe and the dryer air duct assembly. If the air flow is not good, the unit will retain moist air causing the clothes not to dry. Try running the unit with the vent unhooked from the back of the dryer and see if the dryer works properly. Hope this helps.

Hi James. You have 2- issues. 1- is that you have a bad dryer thermistor part # WP8577274. It will read approx. 11.5 - 13.5 K ohms @ 70°. # 2- Then you need to clean the vent system entirely and make sure the vent cap outside opens and closes properly. Thank You.

Gl, You're on the right track, Your exhaust temperature, with the vent system disconnected and the drum empty, should average 155 dgrs.F. Check and make sure the lint filter and housing is clear of lint and debris. Check and clear any lint or debris tht has accumulated in the blower housing and wheel, then replace the thermistor. Thanks and Good Luck

Leslie for Model Number 11078832700

We have a Kenmore Model # 110.78832700 gas dryer. It is not drying very well (slowly) and we notice a lot of loud clicking noises. The vent ducting and exhaust tube is clean. The blower wheel appears relatively clean (didn't actually remove sheet metal housing to clean out). When we turn the dryer on we do see the burner assembly glow red and then the gas ignites. However it just cuts off soon after and this on/off cycling repeats much too often (>= once a minute). We hear a loud click before it ignites (not sure what that is) and 1 click when it ignites. There is another click when it cuts off I think. At room temperature the resistance of the two coils measures w/in specs. The Dryer Thermister is measuring 12.5 kohm at room temperature. I've been told that even though the coils are measuring the right resistance at room temp. they could still be the culprit and be misbehaving once at high temp. Should I replace the coils (and how to know which one), or do I need to check the High Limit Thermostat or flame sensor?

Hello Leslie. Yes, based on the information you provided, it sounds like the coils 279834 may be bad in the unit. Make sure the flame sensor and thermostats are working properly. Hope this helps.

Dan B. for Model Number 11063954102 (Kenmore)

This is a follow up question to the previous question and answer below. I performed the suggested test below and received the following results. Removed the top element wire (which went to themostats) and started dryer; received 120 volts to ground on both top and bottom element terminals. Removed bottom element wire (believe went to motor), started the dryer and had no voltage on either top or bottom terminals of the heater element when I went to ground. From previous answer is this suggesting a timer problem? Also in the control panel and wiring diagram I noticed their is both a heater relay and a motor relay. Is there a way to test the heater relay before replacing the timer? Electric Dryer runs but does not heat up. I have full continuity on the heater box cut off thermostat, the hi limit thermostat, the heating element and the thermal fuse. I have approximately 10,000 OHMS on the Thermistor. If I turn the unit on there is no power getteing to the heating element. I am begining to think it might be something else like the timer. Your thoughts? Asked by Dan B for Model 11063954102 (Kenmore) Dan, Do you have 220/240 VAC at the terminal block on the back of the dryer, with the cord plugged into the socket ? be careful, that's a live voltage test. You may want to try this, disconnect one of the wies from the element terminal, and start the dryer on a heat cycle, check the empty terminal of the element to chassis ground for 120 VAC, if the wire traces back to the thermostats, you'd have an open wire or a bad contact at the timer. Check from the wire terminal of the wire you removed to chassis ground for 120 VAC, if the wire traces back to the motor, you would have an open wire or a bad heat circuit in the motor switch.
