The Thermistor is an OEM part for Whirlpool brand dryers. It is a temperature-sensing resistor that monitors air temperature changes during the drying cycle. The thermistor provides feedback to the control board on heating element performance and internal air condition.

Symptoms of a failed thermistor include:

  • Inaccurate temperature readings and selections
  • Improper or incomplete drying
  • Safety issues from overheating due to lack of feedback
  • Error codes displayed on the control panel

Causes can be related to normal wear and environmental exposure over time. Failure prevents the dryer from achieving optimal drying conditions.

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Thermistor (Part Number: OEM18040551)

Hello Linda, When the unit is placed on a timed dry cycle it does not use the sensor bars so it will run until the time is up. This is normal operation. If the unit dies this on an automatic cycle you will need to use a cotton cloth moistened with rubbing alcohol to clean the residue from them that is accumulated from the use of softener sheets. You should also use the rubbing alcohol on the lint screen so it can pass moisture instead of repelling it.

Joe, With the check vent light coming on check the blower wheel to ensure that the blower wheel is not damaged and no clogs in it. If this checks ok then the issue will most likely be with the control board of the unit.

Jay, to remove the front panel, use a putty knife and there should be a clip located on both sides of the front panel, in between the front panel and the door. It will fold down and then you should be able to access the thermister on top of the blower housing. You should be able to use a small 1/4 inch socket to remove the nuts on the thermistor.

Stephen Clark for Model Number Whirlpool Duet Dryer Model WED9400STO

My 9 yrs old Whirlpool Duet Dryer Model WED9400STO stopped heating. I discovered that the heater element was broken. I replaced the heater element, thermal cut-off, Inlet Thermistor/High Limit Thermostat Assembly, Thermal fuse, and Outlet Thermistor. After a thorough cleaning, I power the unit on and everything appears to be working fine, including heating. After a short time the unit now cuts off displaying a F22 code. This code has never appeared before. Since the Outlet Thermistor is new and reads 12.43 Kohms, any idea as to the problem and a possible solution approach? Thanks,

1 Answer

Stephen, the error code F-22 is an outlet thermistor open error code. make make sure the wiring is correct. If the resistance is correct then you would need to replace the main control. WPW10110641
