Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Water Valve (Part Number: OEM18018957)

1 Answer

A water valve would not increase your water fill. Make sure your water pressure is correct, it should run around 60-80 psi.

Norman, Check at the back where the bearings are to make sure that there is no leak at this point and check the bottom of the tub but this sounds likely that the water valve is the issue.

I have a MAH4000AWW Neptune washer that will operate fine other han being able to let cold water in. On warm cycles it only dispeses hot water and when it gets to the 1st rinse it stalls out on the 8 minute limit for filling. If I fill it manually by applying power to the cold water solenoid it fills fine, the pressure switch recognizes when low fill limit is reached and the recycles pump comes on and the rinse cycle completes as well as the final 2 or 3 rinse cycles and spins. There are no visible problems with the control board. Can you help me diagnose further?

1 Answer

Charles, If the fill valve operates in a test mode that you used, then the problem is in the control board WP22002989 or the water temp. switch 22002268 or wiring. When you select a cold or warm water temp there should be 120 VAC out of the control board on connector P7 pin 2 blue wire. When you select warm / cold or cold/cold settings at the temp switch, there should be an "open" circuit from red wire to the pink wire and an "open" circuit red to purple. These are "inputs" to the control board to control the water temperature. The first thing to try, remove the connectors from the control board, check the pins on the board and the terminals inside the connector and make sure nothing is loose or corroded.

We moved our washer to clean behind it; then reconnected it and set it back. Now it runs through the wash cycle then stops at the first rinse cycle (bleach) and after a few minutes the On and Door Lock lights turn off. I restart it by pressing the On button and wait for the Door Lock to turn on; then by either pressing the Water Temperature or Option buttons the timer will advance to the first rinse cycle. It will continue through the spin cycle and shut off. Also, It will not wash in the Cold/Cold temperatures. Is this a Machine Control Board issue?

1 Answer

Hello Joe. Yes, based on the information you provided it does sound like the board Is bad and will need to be replaced on the unit.

Jessie, if power is removed to the unit and it continues to fill you'll need to replace the water inlet valve, part number WP22002795. Thanks.

Hello Allen. Check and see if the screens in the valve are clogged. If not, you may need to order and replace the fill valve on the unit.

When I start my cycle for my washer, The water is coming out hot and cold at the same time no matter what the setting is. It is running the water continuously all through the cycles. This is even occurring during the final spin mode, where no water should be running at all. When the wash cycle stops, and the door unlocks, the water will stop running. Can you give me advice on whether this could possibly be the Water Valve, or the control board? I have already replaced the Motor Control Board and the Motor in January of 2013.

Hello Dustin, This unit has a temperature sensor and the water temperature is adjusted automatically by the control. It does not matter what water temperature it is set to, since it is designed to adjust the water when set to cold, to a minimum of 65°F. The hot valve still gets opened to stabilize the water temperature. If the valve opens when it should remain closed, the water temperature switch 22002268, the timer WP22002867, or the machine control board WP22002989 is at fault.

About a year ago, my Maytag Neptuen clothes washer experienced a high-speed spin deficit, which I resolved (given that the R11 resistor on the control board was not burned) with a wax motor. Now, my washer repetitiously stops throughout its cycle and never accomplishes its end-of-cycle high-speed spin. The R11 remains unburned and I have no perceivable deficit of water flow--the washer's water service is softened. Having read a number of other queries and responses, I'm torn between ordering and replacing the water valve (22002795) or the control board (22002989) or, is there some other potential defect of which I'm ignorant.

1 Answer

Hello DIY Attorney, It is a possibility that the wax motor has failed again. If the water flow to unit is good and the unit is filling properly and draining properly then the water valve would be good. If the wax motor is going bad then you would want to replace the wax motor and control board as the control board would cause failure of the wax motor. If you are not getting enough water to the unit, even though it is softned, you will want to check to make sure that the screens are not clogged. If not then you may need a new valve.

I am a retired Mechanial Engineer I have keep this Neptune washer running I have had it apart and spread all over the garage when I rented a Tony tool and replaced the bearings. Now 8 months post the bearing job it just shuts off, sometimes during first five seconds but mostly on the 2nd rinse and extra rinse of course I suspected the water valve so I took it out and the continuity was fine. I removed and have cleaned all connections and have check for restrictions. I even took out the pumps disassembled and cleaned. The machine when it runs it runs great except the old lady is just wants new with all the steam toys. 2 years ago I fixed the control board got the parts at R Shack. It just bothers me I can not fix it. I guess I will just put in a new water valve and pressure switch. What do you think. In 42 years of marrage this is the third set of Maytags but these Neptunes have been a challange. Maytag should have sent me a free set for the R & D in the field they might not have gone belly up. For some reason I just like these Neptunes. Please Advise.

1 Answer

Hello Jeronomo, It appears that it may be a control board issue. You should check for voltage to the water valve when the unit stops and see if the valve is getting power. If not then you have a control board WP22002989 issue rather than a pressure switch or valve.
