My dishwasher quit cleaning dishes and lost all pressure. The food screen would keep clogging up and I would have to take it out and clean it by hand. After putting a new impeller in, the "gears" on the impeller connected with the screen blades, the old impeller the "gears" were stripped off. This was a difficult problem to diagnose. Because the machine would start the wash cycle then shut down after a few minutes of running, it appeared that the cause might be a bad thermostat or heating element, but all checked out ok. The odor in the dishwasher was due to scum buildup in the walls, the racks, and in the lower part of the drain below the lower rotating arm. One of the valves in the vertical tube was stuck in the open position; since the valves cannot be replaced, the entire tube needed replacement. The check valve probably needed no replacement, but once I opened the bottom part, I decided to replace it anyway. I first verified the house panel circuit breaker was not tripped. It wasn't so I removed the bottom kick plate of the unit, using a circuit cricket I verified the power feed to the unit was live. The bottom kick plate had a trouble shooting guide in a plastic sleeve which I opened and reviewed. Based on information in there it appeared the TOC was likely the issue. Ordered the parts and followed the instruction videos that Sears provide, Initially tried to order parts from Sears directly but the web-page kept complaining about my shipping address. Their loss- no wonder they're going out of business. Also, should note that the original assembly was plastic but the replacement was metal. Sure sign of a crappy cost-cutting decision. We initially noticed the dishwasher running loud and failing to completely clean dishes. Research suggested issues like this were normally caused by either the main circulation motor or the drain motor. Over the next week the noise worsened, and it became obvious that the circulation motor had went (loud whirring noise whenever the spin cycle kicked in). Our 7 y/o dishwasher wouldn't close and therefore we couldn't get it to run. I called several service places who charged $75-$90 diagnostic plus parts & labor, and they were not able to get here for at least a week. I knew it was going to run at least $200. Kitchenaid wanted > $400 for a 1 YEAR WARRANTY, but it would cover this service call and any more throughout the next year. Seemed a little steep given the unit is already 7 y/o.
